In most games sexuality doesn't matter because it doesn't affect killing aliens. It really only matters in The Sims or western RPG's that have a life simulator part to it.

I was playing GTA IV recently. There are two gay characters. Every character except by the gay ones call someone gay as an insult and are insulted by calling someone else gay. The entire game could be seen as how their idea of masculinity destroys their life.

Nicely summed up.

As someone else mentioned, the gay characters in Valkyria Chronicles are done quite well. I'd also like to point out Florian from GTA IV. On his own he was a stereotypically flamboyant gay guy, but what was great about it was the fact that Niko didn't care. He treated him just like he treats everyone else.

Kanji in Persona 4. an openly gay character
His 'true feelings' are horribly stereotyped though.
Those were his 'true feelings' as conveyed by his Shadow. Shadow's are deliberately overdone for 'attention' on the midnight channel.

And I'm of the opinion that Kanji's straight, just effeminate. Look at how he reacts to Naoto.

Gay characters annoy me in games. Not that I have anything against them, but still.

Why do we even care if a games character is gay, straight, bi, asexual whatever. Generally it doesn't have a necessity in the plot to reveal ones sexuality unless its some horriblly done romance. Masterchief is asexual and that effects the game non, I think you could make a case in many games that the sexuality of a character is whatever you project on them. If you want sam fisher to be gay then do it, same for gordan freeman if you want alex to just be a good friend them mentally play like it. We dont need games to shoehorn you into one way or the other, so yeah I cant say I care for gay or straight in games. Make my character asexual and I will take it from there.

Why would it make a difference?

I don't mind gay people, but shoe-horning gay characters into a game just to tick a box is utterly stupid.

Wouldn't mind a gay character in something like Gears of War. Either way most game writers are incredibly bad and so would make him camper than a camping site; a believable gay character would give the game instant rep for me.

Like Bernie in GTA IV. Now that's sterotypical!
