I'm gonna go on a limb and say 90% of FF XIII.
Flame Shields raised to 200%.
Haha, while I love this game and am playing through it currently, I have to agree with you. It's actually a very good example of what you're looking for OP. It's a beautiful looking game but it's not quite reaching that point of being natural yet.
Thank God, someone agrees with me.
Also: TROGDOOOOOOOORRRRRR!!!!!
Tis nice to meet another fan who can have a middle ground between thinking the game descended from the heavens versus a shit factory xD It's certainly nowhere near a perfect game but I'm having a blast playing it.
>_>

HE WAS A DRAGOON MAAANN....
Well, I kinda thought the gameplay was an attempt to be more strategic, but it took too long before strategy actually kicked in to the paradigm system, and the fact that they added the Synergest/Ravager/whatever class system, and switching them on the fly, reminded me of how Persona worked, so I thought to Persona and it's better soundtrack and gameplay.
But overall, FF XIII was just kinda meh to me. It's not totally horrible, but the characters weren't exactly distinctive, the art design reminded me of every other JRPG that took place in the future, and combat is just tedious against normal enemies. I mean, bosses should be tedious and difficult, but if it takes 3 minutes to defeat some low level goon that hardly damages you, there's something wrong. And besides, FF XIII tried to do what Persona did about 4 years ago, and kinda produced a meh result.
I mean, they coulda had something as awesome as this as one of the boss themes:
Or for Christ's sake, they could've had this after every battle:
But whatever, it wasn't the worst thing Square Enix has made. Just the least memorable.
Maybe, he was just a dragon, but he's still TROOOOGGGGDDOOOOORRRR!!!!
