Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is a pretty good little horror game, makes for a fantastic introduction to Lovecraftian lore too.

Well, I have yet to play any Silent Hill, so I can't recommend it can I? But Bioshock is probably the scariest game I've played. It's not survival, but the atmosphere is masterful, and the gameplay is also quite good. Resident Evil 4 isn't bad, scary moments but not a particularly scary game. Fun though. And it's very fun on the Wii. Lastly, Doom 3 has a good atmosphere, but nowhere near as good as Bioshock. F.E.A.R. The graphics are bad compared to today, which detracts from it a little. But it is still really really good. None of these games are survival horror, but they all have a scary atmosphere that keeps you tensed up. Bioshock is the best for that, and probably my favourite in every other area of gameplay as well.

If you have ever played any form of survival horror Dead Space just isn't scary, I don't mean to detract from the gameplay, because it is a good game, but I found myself knowing what was coming.

Resident Evil is always a good start, a genuine classic :)

And of all the games mentioned here how come no one has mentioned Koudelka? It's one of my favourite RPGs of all time and can probably be stated as being unique, ignoring Shadow Hearts of course.

Silent Hill 2 is amazing for atmosphere on both PS2 and PC.
I see a lot of people are recommending Resident Evil. You should try the remake on Gamecube, It's just like the original but SOOO much prettier!

You can get Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 on PC, you won't need a PS2 for them. And as for the first game (which is the best IMO, as well as the scariest, despite everything everyone says about SH2), I bet your PC can emulate a PS1 well enough for you to play it.

Blair Witch 1 is somewhat scary, too.

The two Penumbra games are very good, and they get VERY scary sometimes.

And for a bit of a different experience (as well as for a different and betterdefinition for the term Survival Horror), try the Clock Tower series. You can even find a translated ROM for the first game, which could be considered piracy, but, well, it's an SNES game, I doubt they still sell it... :)

Oh, I almost forgot. The Gabriel Knight games are very good too, if you are into point'n'click adventures. Speaking of which, you can play Yahtzee's Chzo Quadrilogy, they are very good too.

Finally, if you want to play an Alone in the Dark game, go back and play the very first one. The Lovecraftian story is the best in the entire series. And while you're at it, you could play the Evil Dead games too, for a laugh.

That's all I can think of for now.

Tbh we can suggest anything or everything but it depends whether you are looking to be genuinely scared by the games, because if you are it shortens the list dramatically...

Are you looking for BOO HA SCARED YOU! or Creepy, because they are two very diffent things. Boo/Shock scares don't work on me. I may jump but that's not the same as being actually creeped out/scared.

Good Boo! games:

Umm... errr... I said good right? Hmmm.... maybe S.T.A.L.K.E.R, but that one didn't really do it for me on the "scare/creep" factor. Just an all around ok game with a "oo, I'm scary" attempt at presentation.

Good Creepy:

F.E.A.R. (1, not 2) has good atmosphere and pretty good shooter presentation.

Vampire: Bloodlines: lackluster game overall, but the haunted hotel level was pure gold.

Silent Hill Series

Patently not scary or creepy:

Condemned. "Dark" does not equal "scary."

Doom 3. "Dark" and "Spawn Monster Behind You" do not equal scary.

Resident Evil series. Occassionally fun, but not scary.

Bioshock: Just a good game, but not scary.

Dead Space: Was scary for 5 minutes, until you realized you could look around any given room and predict with 100% accuracy what was going to "appear," from where and when. Very by the numbers.

Bioshock may not be considered a true "Horror" game but, it scared the #$@#!%@ out of me the first time i played it.
When you first get the shotgun, and the lights turn off?
Id rather not remember that part.

One part that got me was,You were taking pictures for the crazy artist and one target had you go into a bar, i think, and there was a basement in the are with a wax statue and a chair in one corner of it. the lights were also flickering.
Well i went over to the chair and looked at it for a sec, then i turned around and the statue was right behind me, good thing i had the shotgun equipped because needless to say, i jumped a good foot in the air from where i was sitting and my fingers pressed down on the trigger's HARD.

Siren: Blood Curse is creepy as hell. Unfortunately, the controls are also something out of a horror movie.

I don't play PC, so I'm going to go with Left 4 Dead.

I haven't played L4D2, but I'd imagine that would be even better.
