So, I'm in the mood for ridiculous amounts of fake blood/scary japanese kids/backwoods creeps. The Battery is the last "horror" movie I remember watching and that was a long time ago. Cool poster and one hilarious scene, but pretty boring otherwise.

A friend told me to watch Sleepaway Camp, I did, the ending is... interesting. Now I feel I need something different to help me erase the disturbing imagery. I don't know what affected me the most, those short shorts or the way it ended.

Anyway... new movies, old movies, remakes, nothing is off the table. Bonus points if it's a foreign movie.

That ending was a surprise wasn't it? Kinda progressive in a way too.

Have you seen Tokyo Gore Police? If not that certainly will fill your fake blood quota although it not really scary more funny really.

Audition is one I have heard is a really scary Japanese horror flick, but i haven't seen it.

I liked Jessabelle (2014), although IMDB has a different opinion of it. I sought it out after seeing Sarah Snook in Predestination.

I also liked The Babadook, but I felt really, really bad for the mom. It was painful watching her go through the ringer.

I mentioned Housebound (2014) previously in another thread. I thought it was a great mix of scares and humor. It's from New Zealand.

As Above So Below - This movie kind of dragged for me in the same sense that people disliked the first Halo because it reused major level portions later in the game. Still, it was a little different. I won't spoil it for you.

I recently saw Oculus (2013), but I liked the director's previous film, Absentia, much much more. And Absentia was a super low budget movie, funded through Kickstarter.

Well, I dunno what you specifically want, like if you're into classic Clive Barker (Hellraiser movies) or John Carpenter (The Thing), for instance.

Until we get some details, I think you should see Tucker And Dale VS Evil. It's a bit camp and funny, but I think it'll wipe some bad imagery from your mind.

Aaand to put some back in, try the Tetsuo movies, Japanese body horror involving men turning half-machine and all crazy.

I'm surprised anyone else even watched The Babadook. I'd second it as a pretty equally creepy film, but more so for the atmosphere you get from it as opposed to fake blood flying about everywhere.

If you're into something with more of a comedy vibe to it over a straight up horror flick, Dead Snow 1 and 2 are pretty much horror camp. Nazi zombies are about and there's MORE than enough blood going around that movie. Also, it's Norwegian(?) so there's your foreign bonus points.

As far as straight up scary movies go, I don't really think I can come up with anything terribly recent. Drag Me To Hell was probably the last good straight up, non-ironic scary movie I've seen in ages. And even then there was still a bit of comedy to it as well.

The Babadook gets another vote from me. It was one of my favourite movies from last year.

Event Horizon is a pretty good one. It's about a ship that was able to jump across space. However, on its first trip, it was lost. It then reappears years later and that is where the story begins. It got kind of slammed by critics but I'd say it's probably one of the most underrated movies of all time (at least in the horror/sci-fi genre).

Recently saw The Babadook, really well done loved it.

Imprint, made for the television show Masters of Horror, but banned from TV, for good reason. It's four hours though, 60 minutes to watch and 3 hours to recover from what you just saw.

Mama, really creepy, and a really interesting ending.

Don't Be Afraid of The Dark.

Ravenous, one of my favorite movies.

Sauna, hard to describe.

Tetsuo: the Iron Man is without a shadow of a doubt one of my favorite WTF horror movies and definitely worth recommending.

OT

The Evil Dead movies and its sorta-reboot/remake are enjoyable if you enjoy gore up the wazoo (my shit)

Cabin in the Woods is a great horror-comedy/deconstruction.

Re-animator is a great horror-comedy based off of HP Lovecraft's short story, Herbert West: Re-animator (incidentally the actual short story is meant to be a comedy...albeit a failed attempt)

John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy (The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness) are really good.

Silent Hill is one of the few movies based on a video game that gets the spirit of its source material (with some liberties) right. The atmosphere alone is worth recommending. The sequel however...fuck that shit.

Yet another vote of the Babadook from me.

One of my top ten favourite movies of all time is the Conjuring by James Wan (of Saw fame). Loved the pacing, the characters, the subtle horror... it was all good.

Mama is another favourite but I'll get behind almost anything with Guillermo Del Toro's name on it somewhere.

There's the French movie "Mutants" which is kind of an atypical zombie movie in that it has a horror vibe but at its core it's a survival, tragic love story. I dunno, I liked it.

The later Saw movies veer on the hilariously hard to take serious; all the gore and the story died WAY long ago in the series leaves them as just gore/torture porn that's easy to kill a couple hours watching.

The Indonesian Mo Brothers have been putting out some pretty entertaining stuff in recent years: Rumah Dara (a short film you can find on youtube) was made into a film entitled "Macabre, which is a total, relatively unique slasher. The female lead, Dara, is extremely well acted and menacing and i loved her through the entire movie...the best/most gore i've seen in a while, caught it on Hulu. Most recently they co-wrote and directed "Killers." More horrifying then horror in my opinion; a modern day, multilingual, serial-killer masterpiece. Kazuki Kitamura creeped out all my fucks for real. Great direction, good story, these guys need to do more stuff!

Can't say enough good things about "The Babadook" and "I Saw the Devil" as well. Enjoy.

Audition. Don't watch a trailer, don't look at a poster. You really don't want to know ANYTHING before you watch it. Just download it and watch it. Be very patient with it and you will be rewarded with a lifetime of being creeped the fuck out.

Well, if you're mentioning Lovecraft, I'm recommending From Beyond. Based loosely on the story of the same name, this is almost like an aftermath OF that story and a bit nuts.

And as a bona fide Pittsburgher, I must recommend the works of George Romero (Night of the Living Dead and the movies that followed it).

I'll add a bit more now that I'm not busy:

If you're going for something a bit more comedic, I'd highly recommend Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. It's about two rednecks who have a series of unfortunate (and deadly) events happen around them that leads a group of students to believe that they're being hunted by them.

Sinister was genuinely creepy despite having the cheap jump scares.

V/H/S 2 was pretty decent. One of the shorts involving a creepy cult school is especially well done. Most of the other stuff, while inventive, are mostly just used as new ways to create jump scares. Still the Safe Haven short makes up for it IMO.

VHS 1 and 2 are pretty good. Though there are some really stupid bits.

The Troll Hunter and Ragnarok were both surprisingly good movies if you donLt mind subtitles.

As for classics i'd have to say the Hellraiser series. 1 and 2 are definitely the best but number 5 is definitely worth a watch too.

Pretty sure these are all still on netflix.

I'd second The Thing.

Especially if you are a fan of 40k. It's more or less a ship back from the Warp.

Oooh right, I completely missed the spirit of the thread! You're right, The Babadook wouldn't apply under the original parameters. I guess I'm not much of a bloody slasher movie type of fan, but if I had to search back in my mind for something close, I would recommend The Descent (I always mention this movie, sorry), Dog Soldiers, 30 Days of Night, or Pandorum.

Oh, and I still recommend Housebound. It's a fun movie; there's some jump scares, but the humor really goes with it well I think.

Seconding/thirding Tucker And Dale VS Evil and The Thing. Both hugely enjoyable, but in very different ways.

I haven't seen anyone recommend Splinter yet. It's a nice creepy/gory low-budget film that really shows what you can do with practical effects and a limited number of sets. Check it out.

Holy crap, finally! Another person that's seen Absentia! I can't recommend this low-budget movie enough.
It's just so perfectly shot and paced. The two sisters give great performances, and the "antagonist" is such a creepy and interesting idea. I recommend it to any horror fan.
