Got any suggestions? I'm talking about movies like Cube. Movies that are more psychological in its horror. Movies that do not have:
* Weird monsters.
* Serial killers
* Ghosts
* Aliens
* Etc

Wait...Cube has a bad guy. Someone put the random individuals into that Cube so that person would be the serial killer. You've broken your own rule!!!

Alright, nitpicking aside:

The Signal [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780607/]

This is such a trippy movie and I found it very enjoyable. Basically, TV's, radios, cell phones, etc. start emitting a signal that causes anyone to hear it become insane. The thing I enjoyed about this movie is that it's broken up into three stories, with some of these stories from the insane person's point of view. This is highly entertaining to me :)

I love psychological horror movies, but for some reason, I can't come up with any! I'll be monitoring this thread.

The Blair Witch Project is a penultimate example of the horror being inside your head. It was enormously successful because of this.

Then, when it got old after a couple of years, people started hating on it the way people do on anything that's really popular and over-promoted or so prevalent that you just get sick of hearing about it's existence.

[sarcasm]Yeah, the 2nd one was so much better, though.[/sarcasm]

The body horror movies of David Cronenberg come to mind, especially Videodrome and The Fly. In the fly, the monster is the main character, and the horror comes from the pain and suffering he goes through as he transforms. In Videodrome, the horror comes from an... Eyeglasses corporation? And TV? And one's own body? It is a bit more complicated than that, but it is fairly scary.

This, so much this.

OT- I played Amnesia earlier and was about to say it but realized that this thread is for movies and that I don't watch many psychological horror movies, or rather, never experienced a good one aside from Blair Witch Project.

The Happening... maybe? Unless you count the trees/plants as monsters.
I used to watch a ton of horror movies, I don't know why I can't think of any others.

Butbutbut, The Happening is hilarious! It's one of the most entertaining bad movies ever! How is it a horror movie?

Anywhos and everyways, I'd recommend Jacob's Ladder. It is very much a psychological thriller about, well, you'll have to see for yourself. Grotesque hallucinations, desperate confusion and insanity. Fun times.

EDIT: As an aside, I posit that monster movies can be intense on a psychological level as well. Alien works so well due in part to the hideousness of its monster, which evokes a human distorted into a machine, and the way its lifecycle represents our fears about sexuality and pregnancy.

Hmm probably "Black Swan"

I would also recommend Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds", I do not know if you would count them as monsters are not but it will probably be a while before you can feed the ducks again

I cannot count The Fly, as it is still a 'weird monster' that also happens to be the main character. However, kudos for the mention of Videodrome.

I will choose the Cube series. It's not a monster or an alien or anything like that. It's a series of rooms that kill, the owners of it being ultimately in question...but definitely human and in positions of authority.

I'd say Se7en, but that doesn't really count as a horror, psychological though. But, I may watch this thread carefully for the responses...

Altered States
Andromeda Strain (?)
Session 9

You've put some very harsh restrictions on it if you want it to be "horror" too.

er, Severance?

Can The Talented Mr. Ripley be considered horror? Or is it more of a drama/thriller kind of deal?

Man, this is hard. I can't seem to think of any. All I think of have either some kind of monsters, serial killers, or can't be considered horror.

American Psycho gets an honorable mention:
because he didn't actually kill anyone, so he isn't actually a serial killer, but whatever

What is the ultimate example, then?

EDIT: Oh my. Why didn't I think of it sooner. Basically any Alfred Hitchcock film.
