It's all due to a major trust complex everyone has. Nobody can be trusted to anybody. You can't prove that you can be trusted, it just gets gained/earned eventually.

And if our doors weren't locked it'd be easier for the protagonist to navigate when the world becomes a virtual reality survival horror title.

For starters it is need for insurance, secondly it gives the feel of your house being safe and third it makes it harder for those people to break into your house. Sure they do have the tools to do it but without locks they wouldn't need the tools otherwise. Security systems usually need the doors to be locked and if the door is locked they will might have to break something down which leaves evidence. Although windows can be removed without breaking them. I know this because my Dad is a carpenter and puts in and takes out windows sometimes. One time he got locked outside our house and didn't have keys so he took off one of the windows.

So people just won't walk in, of course if they're determined enough a locked door won't stop them. Of course there are better reasons that have already been stated too. I usually don't lock my door anyways, mainly because my house is a labyrinth, and I need to keep a steady supply of sacrifices to the minotaur.
[sup] I question why I wrote that. [/sup]

I think you're right, most people won't give up just because your front door is locked. If they are planning to rob your house, they will do it regardless. It's not that difficult to break in through a window anyways.

But I think it does deter some criminals, kind of like locking your car doors. Some people just check all the doors in a parking lot and find the cars that are unlocked and steal from them.

Actually, there was a campaign by the WA Police recently called "Burglar Beware" and one of the main security tips it gave to home owners was to lock their doors and windows because that is how must robbers get in.

because my spike pits can only get so full before they are easily escapable. And cause my mom won't let me make a shotgun trap cause "its to dangerous". Its not like anyone will complain any ways if they get shot with it.

If the person ends up breaking the door/lock to get in, and you are in the house, it gives you some warning so you can gtfo. And a person who is determined to get into YOUR house would probably not be deterred by a lock, but a person who is determined to get into A house could be put off and go check the neighbor instead.

If we didn't, then anyone could come in and snag your stuff. But if you lock them, then only the most ambitious of thieves will want to break in.

So, I was really bored yesterday and started thinking (OH MY GOD!). Why do we actually lock the doors to our houses when we're going out? I mean, if someone wants to rob your house it's not likely they'll just walk away if the door isnt open. When people rob houses they usually have tools to break in to your house, and I very much doubt they'd even check the door before breaking in.

Short: Why do we lock our house doors?
Homealone agress with you OP XD

Anyway, the main reason is because its common sense.

Breaking a window; ramming a door; cutting, picking or smashing a lock, are all pretty conspicuous.
Assuming you live next door to other people its a good idea to lock your doors, because your neighbours are more likely to notice and report someone acting suspiciously than someone simply walking through the front door without having to negotiate with locks.

A lock will only do its' job to keep those who aren't seriously considering it away. If you're seriously considering breaking into a house nothing will stop you.
Except our lazer triggered 170 decibel alarm next to the doors and windows. Almost instantly deafens the target and it can be permanent.
