Partly because a lock is actually a pretty strong deterrent; I'd imagine a lot of robbers just try doors/windows until they work.

Also, if you get robbed and the doors unlocked then you can't claim on the insurance.

To keep people who are not thiefs out. Like your mother-in-law or an extra friendly neighbor who doesn't want to steal anything but a cup of sugar. I guess it also works for people who want to repo your stuff, at least for a little while anyways.

Because some kids in our neighborhood like to steal shit from easy targets i.e. Unlocked houses and cars.

Im in total agreement. Why lock the door when you can set up booby traps all around the house when you leave like electric field with a pressure plate trigger or a razor wire trap and the classical bear trap. Even the wire trigger for a concussion grenade (Bursts eardrums, disorientates and definitely makes their life alot harder). OH and dont you dare forget the old beanbag shotgun door wire!

Actually, there was a campaign by the WA Police recently called "Burglar Beware" and one of the main security tips it gave to home owners was to lock their doors and windows because that is how must robbers get in.
must... resist... O... Rly...
I said it because a lot of people on the front page said that they serve no purpose.

More to the point, is your house more secure if you leave the door wide open? I see an open front door, I assume the person's in - after all, only a moron would leave their door wide open and go out...

I don't particularly want Mr. Paedophile just waltzing into my house and waiting in my bedroom.

It's to keep out the "polite" thieves. Same reason you lock your car. If your house or vehicle has a window, odds are there's a rock nearby that would help get a determined person through it.

Also, to keep out Raccoons. Little bastards.

Our doorbell isn't working so people try to ring the bell and come in without us even knowing. Would be a nice surprise. Also it just feels weird to leave it open.

I like the feeling that I am making a burglars job just a little bit harder by locking my doors.
