1. i'm a dirty casual - I play all games on easy and am non-competitive in multiplayer games
2. i'm super cheap - I generally only buy games on great sales (steam mainly)
3. I do not support console development and DRM occasionally pisses me off to the point of me not buying the game.

Do I hate consoles? No, not really. Do I believe consoles cause stagnation and thus hold gaming back from it's full potential at any given time? Damn straight I do.
You're both right and wrong with that statement, Consoles do hold back gaming but that has also allowed awesome games to come forth as developers have had to work with the dame kind of graphic limits and thus have made are current games looks awesome and even player better. How ever we do need new system to come out now mainly because we have held onto the 360, PS3 and Wii too long and HAS become more stale and it would be much better to improve on the old tech we have and become a even better gaming communitey

I'm holding gaming back by not complaining enough. I go with the flow and hope for a bright future and plan on how to make things better. I look for the good in games and don't see negative so much as deficiency of positive. The real people whoa re improving games are those who complain unceasingly to let companies know what they did wrong and how inferior they are at making games since they missed X, Y or Z.
I was gon' say something along those lines.

One feels like I'm holding it back by actually enjoying each game for what it is.

Then again, I do my damn research before I buy things.

While they are far from my favorite genre, I mostly like modern first person shooters, (sorry SpunkGargleWeeWee.)

Aside from a couple on my Steam account I don't really have any Indie games.

I either wait until games come down in price or buy second hand.

And I really like my Wii, and I thought that motion controls could have been a real game changer.

Edit: Oh and I will never feel any shame about calling Ocarina of Time my favorite game of all time, or that I will get a Nintendo console to get Zelda or Mario games.

Hmm...

1.) I flat-out do not like playing games on my PC. My PC is more than capable of handling most games ("Can it play Crisis?" I hear you wondering. Honestly, I don't know), but I simply don't like playing games on my PC. Not to mention I barely have the skills to type this post let alone trying to use a keyboard and mouse for, say, Borderlands or KoA: Reckoning.

B.) I prefer action and fighting games to RTS', turn-based strategies, and pause-and-play mechanics. I'm sorry, but that shit puts me to sleep. Notice that I'm not saying their bad mechanics, just that they don't have to do much to make me wanna take a nap.

III.) I don't hate any of the "Evil Gaming Triumvirate," I just hate the jack-offs who are in charge of the companies. As far as I'm concerned, they all can go fuck themselves with a serrated Buster Sword.

Four.) I think more games need rap-inspired soundtracks akin to Madworld or Afro Samurai. Yeah... I said it.

Echo.) I don't hate the CoD series for what it is; I just don't like military FPS' (while being in the US Armed Services to boot, heh). I do, however, dislike how the first MW in particular kinda shot gaming culture in the proverbial dick with a .50-calibur hollow-point sniper round. On the one hand, traditional gamers these days aren't quite as ostracized. On the other... let's just say the mighty dollar (or equivalent thereof) rules all.

5.) DLC? Yay, so long as it's worth my attention and I'm not about to get fucked sideways (think the fiasco with SFxT, or the slightly more subdued but still fucked-up practices employed in UMvC3). Hell, I'll even roll with costume packs for my fighters, so long as it's not like the aforementioned examples where the shit is already featured within the core game and a simple button press or gameplay/achievement-related unlock condition could've done the same job. On that note, Team Ninja can go fuck themselves with that previously-mentioned serrated Buster Sword for what they've been doing with DoA5...

F.) Speaking purely on mechanics and gameplay, ME3's multiplayer is okay at best. I say that because there are several things flat-out wrong with how the game handles in certain places, including dubious hit-boxes on both sides, the difficulty not scaling to how many players involved, powers/abilities not working when or how they should, and being completely at the whim of whatever enemy happens to be nearby when you revive yourself/get revived by another/revive another player (you can be insta-killed during the time you're getting off the ground and are unable to control your character).

There's some other shit I can think that I'm sure makes my gaming habits responsible for whatever crisis is happening way on the other side of the world, but it's past my bedtime.

Think differently.

Two things:

Thing 1 - I have this insane idea that games which tout the multiplayer and are then released with online-only multiplayer punishes poor people and people with no-or-shitty internet connections. To this end, I've been unable to play many games, unlock many achievements, etc. Not only do I have the backwards notion that I should be able to play matches with my friends in the same room but that, if friends aren't available, I should be able to play multiplayer modes and, maps with AI controlled bots.

Thing 2 - Many of you have admitted to liking Halo and Call of Duty. Well that's nothing compared to me and how much I love Nintendo. Not only did I get a 3DS in time to be an Ambassador, I grabbed a Wii U on day 1 and am rabidly anticipating more Nintendo games and 3rd party games released on my new Nintendo playset such as Fist of the North Star, Retro City Rampage and, Need for Speed Most Wanted. What's more, I still play and love Wii games. Zack and Wiki, Xenoblade Chronicles, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns, these are all games I love and want more of. I can't wait for Pandora's Tower to drop here in the US and I'm on the verge of sending seven million e-mails to Nintendo begging for a Teleroboxer reboot and for Nester to be a playable character in the next Smash Brothers titles.

I epitomize that which is holding gaming back.

I own five different Guitar Hero games and two Rock Bands. I am therefore not only allowing the gaming industry to stagnate, but I'm trivialising the music industry as well, with my clicky plastic instruments. Clearly I am an abomination to entertainment.
I personally own (Guitar Hero) 2, 3, 5, warriors of rock and...I think 4...Metallica is in my sights and I really should have bought that long ago...because Metallica. Also I cried when I found out Rock Band Japan was cancelled...not sobbing but still...manly tears because IV by X-Japan is NOT enough (especially since I discovered Detroit Metal City and Seikima II)

Here's a question? Why does anything have to move forward to begin with? Why can't things just stay the way they are... hmmm?

Nah! I don't mean that... completely!

But I do believe certain things should stay in stasis mode. For example: why was 3D suppose to obsolete 2D platformers and fighters? With enough iteration in trying to move "forward," we learned they were fine the way there were - straight up, better off even.

Yeah, you like CoD or Gears, but why does that have to be anchor in the overall progress in games? In 20 years, I would like to think I can go back to playing those games (except CoD, fuck that garbage), and not feel like I'm "better" than that just because I'm now use to holodeck gaming.

Let's see. How am I a bad, baaad gamer?

1. I pirate before I buy, and the pirated copy will see use for a loooong time before I even consider plunking down the cash for the reduced retail price of a game released almost a year ago. Sixty bucks? That's too fucking much. Sorry, Triple-A devs. I tend to love your stuff, but sometimes you're pushing it.

2. I don't like CD Projekt RED's releases. I'm a Casual Western RPG fan, which means I'm brazen enough to stick to low-depth titles like Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Skyrim. I've never been able to espouse the super-complex rule sets put together by Eastern European devs. Put it up to a lack of time on my part. I have a life and I don't care to sit through another rendition of Falcon 4.0's user manuel.

3. I don't take a stand. I don't boycott or holler or shout. I have enough balls to think that yes, some of us are just way too entitled to feasibly advance the medium. A game sucked for you? Too bad. I've read books that suck. You won't see me demanding a refund to the publisher or asking that the ending be rewritten.

4. I have the gall to like the original Mass Effect 3 ending, warts and all. It was an honest effort, it was an attempt to shock the player base out of its constantly mollycoddled state because, hey, that sixty bucks you've drop just HAS to go towards the realization of some kind of hero worship fantasy, right? Right?

5. a) I like The Sims 3 and purchased some expansion packs. I, too, dropped some cash for something as inane as haircuts.
b) I keep a pirated copy of the entire series updated on an external drive, because fuck it if I'm going to be bothered to pay for every single piece of DLC and for every single expansion. I've given you hundreds of dollars over the last couple decades, Maxis, I think I've earned the right.

6. this isn't really a cause for saying I'm holding the medium back, but some people would say I am. I don't tolerate trash talk in cooperative multiplayer titles. I rage-quit as soon as some idiot calls me a ****** on Left 4 Dead because I wasn't fast enough for him. Some see that as being unsportsmanlike, I see that as not giving assholes an inch.

Goodness knows how many Modern Warfare games I just QQ'd out of because the atmosphere just felt utterly noxious.

7. I support adventure gaming, Telltale Games and other sorts of supposedly "twee" gaming experiences today's hardcore crowd has just about zero respect for. I'm old enough to remember some high school grades failing because I was obsessed with Myst's Channelwood Age and would sketch out diagrams instead of paying attention in Math class.

3. ALL GAMES SHOULD HAVE CO-OP! I really didn't know this was some kind of issue gamers have. How does Co-op hold the industry back? It doesn't take anything away from the game, and it let's you share a game you like with a friend. If Halo didn't have co-op, I wouldn't be a gamer today! Gamers and publishers really underestimate this option in games. Sure, multiplayer is fun, but co-op is fun to play with ANY level of gamer. I've introduced many of my friends to gaming through this wonderful game mode!
My problems with co-op are:

1)The game is usually built around it. Meaning when you play singleplayer you're often saddled with a useless AI partner, or a game with it's difficulty balanced for two players instead of one.

2)Content being denied from you in singleplayer. Like in Borderlands, you get better loot the more people are playing, or in Little Big Planet there are some puzzles you need more than one player for.

3)This one sort of depends on who you're playing with, but when playing online you can be saddled with people who don't give two shits about the story, who skip cutscenes, or jump around and tea-bag characters you're talking to and the like.

You know who I think is holding gaming back?
1) Console fanboys
2) People who cry because they get DLC a few days late, and don't seem to understand why. See Skyrim PS3 DLC here*
3) People who are casual gamers BUT SAY THEY ARE NOT. I have no problem with casual gamers.
4) People who cannot distinguish casual and hardcore games but think they can.

So basically people who obnoxiously think they are right without weighing up both sides of any argument.

*Yes I know it was nearly a year late but if you don't understand why I only feel pity for you
Way to completely miss the point of this thread, unless you are admitting that you're a Casual Console Fanboy that cries over late DLC and thinks you know the difference between Casual and Harcore.

Also, no, you're not a year late. The Skyrim DLC you're talking about is only just now getting a "tentative" release date. From your post, you seem to believe that the PS3 users DO have Skyrim's DLC already - which they STILL don't.

I buy used games.

I unironically enjoyed the modern warfare 2 demo. Maybe because it's the first modern warfare I've played.

I play on a console.

I'm the same as you, I love coD. Don't get me wrong, I spend a lot of time complaining about the people who play online but when the red rage (caused by campers and multiple snipers in one building) fades away, it's easy to remembner that the majority of players who kick your ass are just better than you and that there are plenty of people who play the same way you do. so yeah, I love playing coD online. Screw it, it's really satisfying when you get 25 kills after you spend the match clearing out sniper and camper nests.

Besides that, I think I'm pretty forward thinking...

You, uh... You managed to make a really dumb post here, Tom. I mean, not only did you contradict yourself in one single post but you missed the point of the thread.

Also, the Skyrim thing is well documented; you're allowed to be pissed off with it, as long as you understand the why. You're stupid if you say "oh, a year late? Oh well!" because that's bad customer service, among other things.

I pick fights, I think that is my main "holding gaming back" thing. Agreed?

Yeah, I'm allegedly the worst thing to happen to the game industry because I can't fork over $600+ towards a "decent gaming PC" every two years.

"You play on a console? OMG!!! Stop holding the industry back, fanboy!!!!"

Getting really sick and tired of having to put up with that. Want me to get a PC and "stop holding the industry back"? Then by all means send me the money to buy a gaming PC. Aren't willing to do that? Then shut the &^%* up!

I don't have wealthy parents, or a cushy job, so I can't afford a gaming PC. Get over it.
I prefer my keyboard and mouse, to a controller. I also prefer the versatility of being able to jump into a game, or leave the game and do something more productive, or just watch cat videos on youtube.

I could afford to upgrade my computer, but I'm not. I'm not about to waste $1,000 on an electricity guzzling, jet engine/space heater, plus software. A five year old computer has plenty of life left in it.

1) I buy every Humble Bundle but never pay more than just enough to get the bonus game. Also I only play half of the games in the bundles.

2) I buy sequels more than new titles.

3) I buy the same game over and over again with different names and it makes me happy. I appear to have already figured out that I like and only want to buy the same game with new maps.

4) I hate motion controls and touch screens.

I hold the industry back by casually refusing to try titles from genres I don't normally play. Even the most highly praised games will go unplayed if they look too weird or too far from my comfort zone. The more people get set into specific genres of games, the the more boring and insipid those games will seem, if only through constant repetition and similar tropes and gameplay.

Right now, I can barely be arsed with yet another FPS, even though it would be from one of my favourite genres. Had I diversified more, I might not have felt that way. Plus, more money would be going to different genres, promoting a greater focus on none FPS games.
