I just greatly dislike that people misuse the word hate. For example, I loathe and despise almost everything, but I don't hate anything. Same with love, I like lots of stuff, but only love one thing. Stop misusing these words! I've already reverted to mega-loathe, but what will replace love??
OT: You can like and dislike whatever you want, who cares what everybody else thinks? I don't like bacon either. But don't say you hate it.

I'm not sure if I'd call these people who gave you such a hard time about your opinion, "friends." Who cares what people like or dislike? I just think people have too much time on their hands to be honest to even think of these things. Are you telling me you would not eat this?

And in case you are wondering, I have actually lost friends over this. There is a group of people who actually yell loudly about how magnificent coffee and bacon are whenever I enter a room.

I think much of it depends on how you say you hate those things.
And if you lost friends over this, believe, they were not worth of consideration.
To end a friendship just because you dislike what they eat... come on! To think that there is still people who cannot bear a critic.

First: why would we want to hate anything?

Now that that's out of the way, I think your friends are terribly immature. You're allowed to dislike bacon and coffee, and if they want to make a big fuss out of it because you don't, they're the stupid ones. You're not at fault, and as long as you're not being a douche and getting after them for liking it you have every reason to leave them.

Bacon, I kinda understand. It's almost elevated to god-like status among foods, mostly by the internet. Coffee, though. I've met plenty of people who don't like coffee. I even like it, but not unless it has some milk and sugar in it. It's just not a pleasant-tasting drink.

Yes, like you, I think people should just chill out. Like what you like, and mind your own business. I've never attacked someone for not liking a certain thing. I do question why, though. I have met a person who said he didn't like music. Not just a certain genre, he hates nearly ALL music. Now I wouldn't attack him for this, but it's such a foreign thing that I wouldn't even understand at first.

You see, it started out the same way for me. But saying dislike gained me just as much stigma as saying hate, and I began to dislike having conversations with people about bacon/coffee so much that it grew into what is definitely hate.

It's not that Hating stuff is banned...it's just that most people don't have the energy to anymore. Why invest emotional energy in hating when there's so much else to be invested in?
Hate requires far too much commitment for modern men to put in. How do you think we were able to start integrating the schools? Hate is becoming far too slow and clunky to be emotionally efficient, unlike it's more modern successor: Disdain!
Disdain is a higher yield emotional investment with little real commitment when compared to hate. Hating takes lifetimes to pay off, if at all. Look at Captain Ahab.
He hated that Stupid Whale, for good reason albeit, and it was the end of the poor old fool.
If he had merely show disdain or disapproval for the whale, he would had a solid emotional nest egg to retire on.
I recommend trimming down the hate in your portfolio to a few standards and basics like:
General Ignorance, or Racism. Those are good, consistent things to invest hate in. They make you look like a savvy investor.
Personally, I think that Snobbery is good up and comer what with all these hipsters running around. Trust me, when the First PBR Shortage War begins, a sizable hate investment in Snobbery will really pay off.
Where was I? Oh yeah...
But I've invested a lot in introspection...too much really...
Introspection and General Curiosity are my heart bets!

The only innovative thing they did at all was be the first to put random noises in the background of their music. And that went out of style after the eighties!

Anyway OT I generally only associate with rational people so it's not really an issue and we don't force our opinions on each other. However I did meet a classic rock fan who got pretty defensive when I said I didn't like Pink Floyd. Nothing really happened except I was forced to listen to The Wall album on the off chance I would suddenly "get it". I like plenty of Rock, but Floyd just doesn't do it for me.

Your opinion is not a valid reason to hate something.
Just say you dislike something, and the reason why, if they ask. Saying you actively despise something asks for trouble. Our society tends to consider someone declaring their opinion as an open invitation to heckle and annoy. Having an unpopular opinion is even more dangerous.

I apologize for this miscommunication, the reasons I referred to were the ones about the health benefits of the items, not my taste of them.

I'm with you on coffee, I like the smell but not the taste. Bacon however, well saying something like that is just asking to get flamed, bacon is awesome. As far as the risks I think they're largely for people who consume too much of these things. I very rarely eat bacon so I'm not worried about the negative health effects and really this can be said of anything (consuming too much is bad for you).

I've had discussions like this with friends but I wouldn't call them arguments, more like joking around making fun of the odd man out. Anyone who would take this too seriously is just a douche.

I'm going to go ahead and put this on your own head for trying to point out why you dislike these things, rather than just shrugging and saying "I just don't like them." I don't think they're ostracizing you because you don't like something they like, I think they're doing it because in trying to convince them that what they like is bad for them, you probably came off like a dick.

This would make sense, only that isn't how the conversations usually happen.

They go like this:

Person A: Well its not as good as bacon.

Me: I don't like bacon.

Person A: What? How can you not like bacon!

Me: Its bad for you and I don't like the taste

Person A: You mind is deviant and must be purged!
