I might be a horrible person, but me and my friends play a game about who can grab the first celebrity death joke after one dies.

You need to pay more attention to popular culture I suppose.

You aren't alone though. I don't really pay attention either.
NOBODY needs to pay more attention to popular culture. Pop culture is mind-rotting, celebrity-worshipping, culture-ruining trash and the world would be better off without it.

I take a measure of pride in not being able to pick a "famous person" out of a police lineup.

I agree, I have no idea who any of these "celebrities" are... Like this fellow who died a year or two ago, Michelle Jackeson or something?

PS: Yes, I did sign up just to reply :< or is this when I say "long time reader, first time poster /snorf"?
heh, i remember when i signed up to answer to a thread. though i didn't bother making an avatar, thinking i wouldn't be on properly anyway XD can't be bothered to think of a good avatar now.

OT: i'm absolutly awful with names, even of people i know... but i'm sure if there is an afterlife, i will get an opportunity to appologize to them for not mourning their deaths.

You don't "remotely" recognize the guy with the hair as Alber Einstein.

You instanlt know, in your heart, who he is.
All Einstein was known for was his hair? Huh, could sworn it was his theory of general relativity. Or E=mc^2. Oh well..

(not trying to be a dick, lol)

What bugs me is that Gary Coleman got a newspost here on the Escapist... but Dennis Hopper didn't. I've looked, must be an oversight...

I mean, wtf is up with that?
Well, Gary Coleman was in a computer game.

So was Dennis Hopper, several infact. Not all of them were great, while Gary did star in a Monkey Island game.

Anyway, sad to see them go, either way :/
Gary was also in Postal.

You should really know ol Michael Jackson. But even if you do, the sheer amount of coverage was absurd, in contrast to Dio, and others.
Especially since Les Paul himself died a few days later, and got almost no coverage. Michael Jackson's style of music wouldn't have even been possible without the advancements that man made in multi-track recording. Not to mention, you know, inventing one of the first solid bodied electric guitars. No, not the Les Paul -- his first model was a proof of concept that Gibson laughed at, called the log. Gibson later hired him to make the Les Paul once they realized he was ahead of his time.

Eh i don't pay attention to a lot of celebrities ether but it sucks that the ones i do know are dying: Micheal Jackson, Billy Mayes, The Rev, Dio, Paul Grey, and now Gary Coleman. This past year has not been fun...

I'm the same... The only ones I can think of that I actually recognised are Michael Jackson and Dio. I even googled this Dennis Hopper guy and I still don't understand who he is.

I think you should get out more if you didn't know Micheal Jackson, Billy Mays, or Gary Coleman. I mean, I don't go through celebrity magazine, keep up with my "stars", or have any intentions to connect myself with too much of that media, but I knew those three people at least.

sorry, you happen to live under a rock. Your computer should fix that for you but apparently you are willfully ignorant.

OKAY. Michael Jackson and Billy Mayes died less than a year ago. If you seriously don't know who they are I will be very sad. Billy Mayes I will give you a pass if you don't live in the US or watch any TV. But Michael Jackson is really a big person, the largest death in the last year by far.
I forgot about them. It's just been so long since that I forgot that it was less than a year ago. But yes, I recognize those two.

OT: Who the hell doesn't recognize Gary Coleman? Seriously...
Yes! How DARE I not recognize an actor who's sitcom existed before I was born and who's films I have never watched!

You didn't know Dennis Hopper? Have you not seen Easy Rider?
To quote Obi-Wan from Star Wars: A New Hope: "...Should I have?"

People only truly respect a celebrity when the die or are already dead.
Im pretty sure whe all hate Michael bay or Uwe Boll but when they die , im pretty sure you will start watching the shit they loved to make like Transformers 2 and House of the dead.

How come whenever a celebrity dies, I have absolutely no idea who the person is? Seriously. Looking back add the various celebrity deaths over the past year, the only one I even remotely recognized was Ronnie James Dio.

Am I culturally illiterate? Am I too young to know who they are? Is my disdain for what qualifies for a "celebrity" blocking out the really good talent? Do I just pay attention to the media but pay no heed to the folks behind it? Or is it just my inability to match faces with names at work?
Not alone in that. The only times I know about a "famous person" who has died without looking them up is when they are either extremely famous (MJ) or I recognized them from some of my own interests.

I like Dio, he's a cool guy and all that, and he's RIDICULOUSLY talented. Or was ridiculously talented rather.

But the god of metal? I don't know about all that, I'll give him credit where credit is due, but where is Diofest? Why wasn't Dio Sabbath more popular then Ozzy Sabbath? For me Ozzy will always be the father and god of metal. Dio is a better singer, but like all things, it's impact, and not always talent. Plus after Ozzy Sabbath I like Dokken Sabbath just sayin!
