Maybe organizing some game tournaments?

I think playing together would get rid of some of the resentment that some users here hold for each other.
Obviously we should all play Dark Souls 1 PVP with each other, what could possibly go wrong? Ok ok, joking aside perhaps an open user group that let's people post invites to games? I know TF2's server addresses can work well for that.
A Dark Souls 1 or 2 PVP match up with escapist members? Can I bring my dual great shield build?

Give them something to talk about that hasn't been polished smooth by traffic and on which everyone doesn't already have intractable positions?

HA ha ha ha, no, of course, I kid.

Well, demagogues who claim to speak with the voice of authority on highly subjective matters are always good for bringing in the crowd.

More seriously, there's got to be someone of talent on Patreon or Youtube who's work would be better suited to a long-term contract than the fleeting approval of the mob. We still really don't have a substitute for everything LRR brought to bear. At this point, I'd settle for Tales from the Table. Honest Game Trailers is great, but I can see it elsewhere. And Game Theory is... Well, it has its fans. But again, it's possible to catch elsewhere.

If all else fails (he said for the umpteenth time), bring back the Film Festival.

For me it's the moderation that gets me with this site, I honestly don't understand it ... even when they reworded them to be clear, it's still as clear as ditch water. I've had a person indirectly call me all sorts 'cos I have a tribal tattoo but I make a sarcastic comment and I'm being rude.

Even if you read the CoC it says "Low Content Posts. This could be anything from simply answering a question, posting LOL, "agreed," "this," +1, or even a joking quip." I see so many "joking quips" with no more text but no modwrath falls upon them.

I read some of these "got a warning for this post" and wonder why they got wrath ... If I saw this kind of moderating as a nooby, I would be bewildered.
Oh man, low content! Apparently this rule is a lot broader than the CoC indicates, and can basically be used to give an infraction to anything that they decide they don't like. I recently had a thread locked for being "low content" that was 150 words long, had a custom made image, and 2 discussion sparking questions. I still haven't been able to get a straight answer how it counted as low content, even after appealing.
The thing is, I could have sworn I saw a mod (Topaz, I think) saying that low content wasn't being moderated anymore, or had been significantly relaxed and made less-strict.

But now it looks like the pendulum has swung back to the opposite extreme again. (Either that, or Topaz was bullshitting us.)

@omega 616: You raise a good point there. The moderation might be too scary or too difficult to understand for newcomers, and it's driving them away to an extent.

Yeah, he did say that, here. (A quote is as good as I can give you since his actual posts have been deleted)

When holding competitions and such where prizes are involved (haven't seen any for a while) maybe let people outside the US be able to enter? I know there are complications to doing that, but digital rewards, like Steam keys or something maybe? I don't know, but the prospect of being from outside the US and still being included in those special events is something that could help.

Something weekly that can get the community involved, or just the odd member each week like an interview about games with a couple of members of the community (different ones each time). Draw names from a hat, PM them and see if they would be keen to skype an interview or do one over some chatting system, as a new piece of content, that could be interesting, and you could change the theme of it to mix it up. Just an idea, something different that may make people see being apart of this community presents some interesting things outside the norm.

Well, we could invite Bob and Jim back and let the arguments and bile flow freely. Or do you want positive improvement?

Yeah, traffic on most forums come from disagreement and controversy rather than 1000 posts of everyone going "yes that game is awesome." This isn't bad when you can debate and argue in good faith, but over time that ability can get lost, and it can come from both sides. Here it seemed to be GGers posting about every wrong decision and sneeze from someone with progressive politics, and the other side having little to contribute but posts dismissive to any posters suggesting that "SJWs" might have overstepped their bounds.

And in that environment, no one wants to talk because they're afraid of getting dogpiled, or like many of us, we learn what will just start a fight with someone we don't want to fight with and delete the post we started. Good controversial news (or the odd decent question) can get us to de-lurk, but that's getting rarer for me.
The RSI thing certainly did enliven the place for a while.

My first thought would be to remove Zero Punctuation from Youtube. The first drop in forum activity coincides with the time that ZP was uploaded to Youtube,
Hold up, I'm fairly certain ZP started on Youtube (and Yahtzee's own blog), and it was this exposure that led to him being signed by the Escapist. That's why he had to stop using copyrighted music in his intro/outro. Also, don't ZP videos debut on the Escapist first and appear on Youtube a few days later? I may be wrong on that last point.

As for the overall cooling effect on the rest of the forum: I think the losses of MovieBob and Jim Sterling have to be factors. Alongside ZP they generated the most controversy and discussion. The new staff writers haven't had nearly the same broad appeal (for example, the cosplay articles).

The Escapist is pretty much on cruise control right now and has been for quite some time. Unless someone writes them a fatass check or they bring someone on-board to seriously shake up the status quo the site's only going to continue shrinking. Yahtzee is literally the only thing bringing people to the site, and not only can his content be accessed on youtube but I'm fairly certain his audience leveled out a long time ago.

Maybe if they made it more obvious when an article or video gets a forum topic?

Just yesterday I wanted to look at the comments on some article, but couldn't find the link to its forum topic for almost two minutes. All I saw was the "COMMENTS ON facebook" section.

Yes, Yahtzee did do two reviews on Youtube before being picked up by the Escapist, but once he was his reviews were only hosted on the Escapist until July 21, 2011 when his backlog was uploaded to Youtube.

See:

Yahtzee's first review, The Darkness, Uploaded on Jul 24, 2007

Yahtzee's second review, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Uploaded on Jul 29, 2007

Yahtzee's third review, Heavenly Sword, Uploaded on Jul 21, 2011 (date on the Escapist: 08/15/2007)

He didn't stop using copyrighted music until a good deal into his reviews for the Escapist. Lego Indiana Jones was his first review to use his current theme song and it came out on 07/09/2008, almost a year after he started working for the Escapist.

You are right that they do appear on Youtube a week after they appear on the Escapist, but I don't believe that is enough to cause many people to actually come to the site, not to mention people that would watch through his backlog. And actually, it looks like someone else is uploading the reviews to Youtube as soon as come out.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, uploaded by Game Pro on Nov 4, 2015.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, uploaded by the Escapist on Nov 11, 2015.

Get content that'll bring people to the site. After losing Jim, Moviebob, MoS, LRR, etc, they've brought in new content but no-one that's really going to bring in lots of new people. It's good supplementary content for people who are already here, but I don't think any of it (particularly stuff that is just old episodes of stuff already on YouTube) is bringing new people.

Oh, and I'd get rid of the Facebook comments section. Keep the ability to share news on Facebook sure, but the Facebook comments aren't particularly insightful anyway and them commenting there means they probably don't bother to comment in the forums.

Yeah, this comes back to what I was saying earlier about social media overtaking traditional forums like this one.

In the last few threads we had about moderation, I've noticed an increasing number of people saying that they don't need to use this forum anymore because they can post their comments in the Facebook section (which appears on the same page as the actual content does, rather than on a separate page). Additionally, the Facebook comments are not moderated in any way, which some people have said is another reason why they prefer it. (In fact, it's not uncommon to see COC-breaking comments appear in the Facebook widget, right there on the same page as the content.)

That's a good question. Sadly, I know what would...but the Escapist would either never do it or never pull it off because of bad blood.

I hate to say it but staff REALLY needs to do better in terms of completing things and getting out info to the users

Multiple examples but remember the Wicked Halloween Week? Where they would update each picture to link to an article?

Two pictures done out of six and it's been at least two weeks since it's been updated

I've seen this again and again where they say they'll do something but then kind of let it die. It's extremely aggravating to have this happen

I kinda tuned out when I saw SJW there, because every time I see someone complain about it, the complaint is some vague irritation directed at a straw-man. It seems like it's just a new way to dismiss people who aren't right wing conservatives anymore.
Well, how would you suggest we dismiss people who aren't right wing conservatives then?
Well, there is that. But in that case we clearly need another equally mindless empty label to complement it.

So... What is the right-wing equivalent of 'SJW' in terms of being equally annoying and easy to make broad, disparaging generalisations about?

I mean, 'balance' and all that stuff right?
That's, like, important, yeah?

...

Yeah... Perfect.

OT: At the end of the day what made this site what it was in the past was unique, interesting content that you just couldn't find anywhere else.

If that isn't there, then the site simply doesn't really have much to offer.

Why go here, if what you can find here is basically the same thing you can find in two dozen other places on the internet?
Yeah.
Exactly.

I was told the article "reverted", though I'm not sure what that means. The author must have tried fixing it at least once, but I think they were away at an event afterwards and nobody else updated it. Let thy voice be heard in the Tech Team chat.

Fine. I get the point.

I'll make more boobie plot threads to attract views. Gonna have to enlist some help though.
