Mega Man 2. I played the ROM a few weeks ago and it took me forever to kill a single boss, but after that it was just a matter of getting my momentum back and the rest of the game was easy. When I was a kid I remember blasting thru the game with no problems =/

I ended up finding my old SNES Power Rangers game which I know I had beaten when I was 5. I tried playing it today (I'm 19 now) and I only just got through 3 levels.
Anyway, question is... Have you ever rediscovered an old game that you played to death as a kid and totally mastered... Only to pick it up now and fail more than anything?
Mario 3.

World 8 is one of the hardest hours of gaming known to man, I have no idea how the hell we beat that as kids.

Fail miserably at it now.

One word: Contra.

In 1989, my brother and I beat it in co-op without losing a life between us. In 2009, I try it in singleplayer and the Konami Code is hardly sufficient to get me through the first level.
That's a hell of an achievement dude.

Me and my bro beat that game once with the code, and as I recall we didn't have many lives left at the end.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.

I know I lost my gifted childness sometime during secondary school but COME ON. It's only Crash 3!
Croc, my god, i remember that game. Yeah, balls to the walls hard now. And Gex enter the gecko. I picked that up for the first time in like... 10 years. OMG i can't do anything in it. I think its because those old 3d platformers are all laggy, and we aren't used to the movement lag anymore.
Oh Gex, why did you bring him up?
I played both of them again recently too, some of the red remote tasks are ridiculous and cryptic as hell. Also the haunted house/murder mystery one in the Deep Cover Gecko scared me as a child. I think it was the fanged deck chairs.

Alien Storm.

It's the first game I ever managed to complete honestly as a kid (I went through a phase of using cheats to complete games, bad times), played it again last week for old times sake and was dead by level 2.

All of them? I still pick up older games often. I have loads of them. What I don't have anymore is the time I used to put into them. See the games where hard then, and we didn't have the internet, cheat codes, or well much of anything to get us through them - or even tell us what where bad and good games. So when we got a game we damn well had to play it. Which we did, until we where so good at the game that we could nearly play it with out eyes closed.
This man speaks the truth.

For me, its Frogger on the old BBC computers when I was 9. Got so good at that game I was banned from competing in the unofficial torneys we had at lunch breaks. Tried the demo version on the XBLA 6 months ago and got creamed. I blame the controller *looks shifty* Also, Tetris. Still have the PC version with mine and my dads competing high scores and no idea how I managed it. Most other games I haven't really lost the touch once I get back into them.

Actually, my first games were the PS1 Crash Bandicoot games, and I'm surprised at how much skill, and memory, I've retained. I seriously remember every secret and every gem in Crash 2, and Warped is almost as lucky. It's kind of weird, really.

Though I did return to The Wrath of Cortex, the first one made after Naughty Dog sold the series. I forgot how bad it was... :(

Sonic 1+2 completely.
That is my one and only.
Just because i had no other priorities back then. Whereas now, i have to focus on HSC (1 day..) , jobs, relations and a crap load of other stuff that stops me just sitting down and beating it to death again.

Contra was unbelievable.
I had exactly the same problem. While I wasn't as good as your brother and yourself, I still barely made it past the first level...

All the crash bandicoot games, and Star Wars: Rouge Squadron (I think it was the name. On the N64).
Oh I remember rogue squadron, I got my N64 later than most of my generation (damn parents) so by the time I received Rogue Squadron the cheat for the Naboo Starfighter was already out. I never even touched the X-Wing 0_0

Sonic 3, I could do the bonus checkerboard mini game with ease, but when I played it on Sega Ultimate Genesis Collection I couldn't even last 20 blue balls.
I could only finish those on an emulator thanks to quick save/load. In the actual game I just failed at the later ones.

It was on the Sega Megadrive. (And is on the Sega Megadrive collection for 360 and PS3)

It was a great game, you play as a nameless guy who, for some reason, kills blue dogs and gains the ability to morph into some form of monster. First level is a Warewolf, second is a Dragon, third is a Bear. I've never gotten past the third level, it's impossible I tell you.

Yes... quite a few actually... To name some:

Rocket Knight Adventures
Sonic 2

And I'm pretty sure if I played Total Annihilation again, I'd get my backside kicked hard than any other :p

I sometimes take a moment to remember the old school controls, but generally I'm much better now than I was then. I did wonder just how dedicated I was at pokemon when I found my old cartridge, with dozens of maxed out god like pokemon. I had some serious patience back then.

Same. It gives a rather jaded view on how hard certain games actually are if you haven't played them since the time you couldn't get past the tutorial without your Dad's help (damn you Deus Ex!).

EDIT: Having said that, I'm only 15 so my fingers are still nimble as anything. And I can't believe I tried to play Deus Ex when I was 6 years old. No wonder I sucked.

Donkey Kong for Gameboy. How I ever beat that game is beyond me. Towards the last world, the game reaches an uncharted level of unfairness.
