Usually by just browsing youtube or amazon for similar "related" bands to ones I was told about by a friend. I've found the majority of my liked bands that way (or just through sheer happenstance).

The internet and metal-related websites, mainly.

You were on the OT?!
For a certain time yes....... along long time ago though, back in late 08 a bit of early 09 i guess.

YOU WERE ASWELL? :O
Yep. I was known as "Ëx" over there. I was one of the more high-profile posters, as well as being one of the site's black metal fans.

Either through my parents, one of my friends, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, or through Pandora.

Got into Dream Theater through my parents, System of a Down through my friend, Disturbed through NFS: Most Wanted, and Avenged Sevenfold and tons of other bands through Pandora.

A good deal of it was random, but the rest was Pandora. Found so many new kickass thrash artists while I played WoW. It got to the point where I continued playing WoW, despite being bored to death, just so I'd have something to do while listening to music.

Honestly?
Quite often I type a random word into ebay or amazon and flick through the cds they're selling.
If I see something vaguely interesting I buy it, listen to their back catalogue etc.
Or my favourite band, Ladycop (look them up, they're AMAZING), I found when they randomly played at my local.
I live in Bolton, near Manchester, and they were touring England to support their album.
They're from NYC, awesome dreamy guitar stuff.

LADYCOP, seriously, look them up now.

Sort Søndag (weekly metal program), on Danmarks Radio Rock channel. Then after hearing them played there, i often look them up on youtube, and then related video's. Found The Agonist and Eths that way, awesomeness!

A lot of the bands I love now I got through my oldest sister. Some of the newer bands I've been finding recently are all thanks to Pandora. I <3 Pandora.

Accident, generally. Occasionally I'll hear something good on the radio and they'll actually give it's name, but most of the time they don't. Generally I'll see some sort of trailer for something and it'll have a song with it i like, so i open it up on youtube, which promptly suggests a bunch of songs from the same or similar bands.
