Usually from the music section in the weekly paper, and occasionally online, via platforms like Last.fm and Youtube playlists.
I have a friend who magically conjures up all sorts of aural wonderment seemingly from nowhere, so he's also a great source of new bands. My girlfriend occasionally sifts up wonderful oddities like Diablo Swing Orchestra and The Indelicates, too. I'm spoilt in terms of new music, really.

Usually my friends notify me about new songs/bands but most of the time I just find them by browsing youtube.

I find most of my music from talk shows like Conan or The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. I also find a lot of music from threads here on the Escapist, most of the music threads that pop up are a freaking gold mine.

Usually by finding, hearing, or being recommended, one song of theirs. Then it all snowballs from there.

One of my brother's friends lent me System of a Down's "Mesmerize" album. I heard "BYOB" and the rest was just me answering the question "what else have I been missing?"

From friends, YouTube, Guitar Hero 3, browsing the related artists on the iTunes Store, Warped Tour, Alternative Press/Revolver (my two music magazines), and increasingly from here.

Usually the band or their management sends me their stuff and that's how I find out. Sometimes I find out about stuff through my guitar students, or through random "what's related" clickfests on YouTube. I also find out stuff through The Escapist from time to time, particularly the "worst music ever" threads which are a minefield of brilliant music (the "best music ever" threads consistently yield nothing interesting though) and also recommendation threads on occasion.

2 of my friends have provided me with about 50-70% of my favourite bands. The rest, I would...

Hmm, actually, I have no god damn idea.

I might stumble across the odd band or two here actually.

Friends & iTunes/Spotify/Shoutcast

srsly you should try Spotify, you can discover loads of new bands/genres from a single starting point. It's worth a look (this is my opinion not add ;))

Random word comes to mind, I google it -- sometimes I end up with a band by pure accident, other times some area / region / concept comes up and then I google some more to find out if someone from over there made music / made music about it. I found Huun-Huur Tu, Voltaire, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Versailles, Olympic '64, Van Canto, Eläkeläiset, the Chiptune genre and many others this way.

To cut it short, out of curiosity if anyone made music about something that came to me by pure hazard. Hmm... hazard... I'm sure there's a band / song in there...

Yep. I was known as "Ëx" over there. I was one of the more high-profile posters, as well as being one of the site's black metal fans.
you might like this band if you haven't already heard of 'em. It's black metal + post rock + awesome.

I've known of Agalloch for a long time. Good stuff, IMO.

Pretty much entirely via the internet, initially mainly through Pandora (and some discussions with others on Pandora). More recently a lot of the music I encounter shows up on my Amazon recommendations page as part of a vast set of interlinked data the company has on me thanks to my myriad music purchases from them - every so often I wade through that sea of stuff and dredge out what looks interesting.

With only a few exceptions, I've stumbled onto or decided to pursue listening to everything I listen to now on my own - I frequently discuss music with others in my day to day life (and quite often give them stuff from my collection), but I'm always the one doing the 'evangelizing' as it were; the only stuff in my music collection I didn't acquire personally tend to be soundtrack albums that my sister buys me as presents.

Ocassionally from trailers, films or what not but most of the time its either bands that I keep hearing about or stuff my friends reccommend to me.

But to be honest its hard to trace it- my current obsession is Gogol Bordello, a band Ive known about for ages but only recently started listening to, I know there must of been a period of time when I 1st heard them, or decided to give them ago but I cant honestly think of it.

Yep, this is it for me too. Most of the bands I have come to love have been introduced this way. xD Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Skillet, A Perfect Circle, Avenged Sevenfold, Nightwish, Within Temptation, and then, all kinds of songs that I just like but don't love the band.

And I have a few I can credit to the radio or my dad, like Evanescence, Disturbed, and Linkin Park.
