First time? I can't really remember, but I think I had 3 missile launchers and the starting burst laser (MK2?). Crew teleporter for taking out their weapons, maxed out shields, about 5 or 6 bars of engine power, and stealth for the super attacks.

Was also using the type A Kestral and playing on easy (because fuck normal).

My two wins came on easy with the two different versions of the slug cruiser. I can't remember which one I won with first or the exact loadout, but I'm pretty sure a teleporter and a good away crew to take out the final ship's weapons were involved.

I think the first time I beat it legit was with the Kestrel after about a billion attempts. No drones or teleporting teams.

I use CE on subsequent runs to give myself infinite scrap... and I use that ship with the Glaive beam and cloaks... on Easy mode... and I still get my ass kicked most times...

The drone phase is usually the one that gets me. The teleport phase is pretty easy if you have Level 3 doors. My reflexes just aren't fast enough to activate cloaking in time.

Red-tail with stealth 2 (it's better than 3 for the boss b/c it syncs with drone/laser burst timings), stealth weapons aug, and ion blast 2/double burst laser 2/dual laser. The 4-second-CD ion blast on autofire kept a few shield bars down, the laser volley took down the rest and allowed my ion to keep the shields permanently offline while my lasers did work. My crew was... couple humans, zolton, engi, couple mantis I think?

There was a scary moment when boarding droids almost wrecked me while my mantises were on the rebel ship killing the missile launcher, but other than that, it worked out pretty well.

With double Burst Laser 2s and bugger all else to tell the truth. Seriously, two of those babies on Kestral A and you don't need any of the extra ship systems.

I remember it as if it was my first game.... oh wait, Kestrel A with maxed stealth, 3 shields, high engines and a halberd beam breach bomb combo I think, on easy though since it was my first game.

Actually I beat the boss for the third time yesterday.. well sort of

And yes for some reason it counted as me winning, complete with credits and all, it felt cheap but with FTL a victory is a victory

Red-Tail: 3 Basic Lasers 1 Burst Laser mk2. Full Shield, Teleporter, Full Cloaking.

Still got less score than on some games where I didn't finish it.

Even on easy difficulty I can't do it. :(

That second phase just rips me apart with those drones.
Ion Bomb works wonders. Bomb his drone controller and phase 2 is cake-walk.

This thread amuses me. Mostly because of all the people admitting to cheating just to beat the game. Not because of anything personally against cheating in (singleplayer) games, but because of certain modern attitudes about finishing and cheating at games. I remember playing 8 and 16 bit games as a kid, knowing I'd never see the end of the majority of them, and knowing that was fine. Actually beating one of them without cheating (and I did cheat on a few titles just to see the end) would have netted me playground bragging rights for life, with good reason. Then somewhere around middle school, game design started to shift, until by the time I was in highschool, the average gamer was bragging about how they beat absolutely every game they bought. FTL, on the other hand, is a very old school game, it's the kind of game that you're really not /supposed/ to beat, or at least not without hours and hours of practice. Which is why I find people cheating on it hilarious -- I'd wager that by and large, these are the same gamers that like to brag about finishing every game they own, and the minute they get one that isn't designed to allow just anyone to see the end, well...

Me, I've got 14.5 hours logged (all on normal) just since buying it last weekend, and I still have yet to get to sector five, let alone beat the boss. But that's okay, because every run that gets me a little bit farther is a victory in its own right, and it's amazingly /fun./

I guess what I'm saying here is, "darn kids with their new fangled easy games, get off my lawn!" :p

Never managed on normal, but on easy my firs time was with the Kestrel and 4 Burst Laser II (the starter weapon). Most of the ship was upgraded to max - shields, power, doors, engines

I would say you have a serious case of nostalgia goggles. Sure, I would also love to sink dozens of hours into the game, but I am not in elementary school anymore (hell, I can barely even remember what it was like) and I just don't have the free time. So yes, I have cheated too. In fact, I wrote an entire Cheat Engine script for the game that let me modify most of the game variables, including weapon reload times, and I STILL found it ridiculously luck-dependent.
Actually, my favorite trick was freezing the rebels' progress. It is a really simple cheat, and it let me actually EXPLORE the systems instead of just running through them on full speed. It was a lot more fun than my first few standard playthroughs.

That said, I have yet to legitimately beat the game, but mostly because whenever my ship gets destroyed, I feel I wasted all the time I took to get that far, and so I always shelved the game away for a few days/weeks.

Kestrel B Normal too, those lv1 lasers are great for leveling up your crew as it's easier to prolong a fight.

Then it was just a case of maximising my scrap collection and not getting my hull damaged so I could almost fully upgrade my ship. Using Cloak to dodge missiles helped alot.

I didn't. Fuckin' bullshit final boss man. No matter how goddamn prepared I think I am I get fucked over by at least the second form.

Cloaking must be 100% mandatory to beat it I swear. I once had to quit out of the final boss because I needed one more missle hit to get its shields down then KEEP them down and I ran out of missles a second too late.

I was just dodging all the damage it was doing to me with Cloaking and max'd shields so it was a huge boring standoff. I had to let it kill me pretty much

I never use any Ion stuff though. It doesn't do proper damage so I automatically consider it to be shit and not worth any of my time.

Still haven't done it :(. I managed to get to the third form once, but I had just taken too much damage by that point. I never stood a chance.
