My dad's a symphonic music buff, some of which he passed on to me. I'm still not especially knowledgeable on that front, but only because I discovered J-pop and power metal on my own, almost simultaneously. I still appreciate a lot of Romanticist and (Post-)Modern symphonic stuff (Stravinsky, Dvorak, Mussorgsky, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Holst, and others).

Other than that, my parents haven't been much of an influence on my music tastes. Though you could argue that my own discoveries and my dad's influence led me to liking symphonic metal...

Take a cup of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple from my Dad, a dashing of David Bowie and a tiny bit of Bauhaus from my Mum, leave to simmer in a saucepan of generic rock, and you get.... black metal????? this isn't right

I stole most of my dads old 60's and 70's rock LP's when I was about 14 but it was only a phase of a couple of years, I haven't listened to that sort of stuff for a long time, except Leonard Cohen. Although I still have to admit Elvis is the king.

As for my current music tastes, no family influence to be seen.

From my parents, there were two completely different influences: country and classic rock.

My mother was huge on the hick music and would blast it all the time, singing horribly to it. To this day, I still can't stand the crap. What makes it worse is that listening to it for several years has given me a hick accent, even though I live in Queens New York, the farthest south I've ever been being northern New Jersey.

My father, on the other hand, listened to a lot of classic rock. To this day, I still love the music and this is the only thing that my father has done to me that was a good thing.

My taste in music largely consist of various types of rock, although I do have sprinklings of other genres that I listen to on occasion.

Well, I bitterly hate the Grateful Dead...
Nooooooo! where else can you get hippy, jazz, reggae, country and rock that isn't just a bunch of nonsense over crappy chord progressions?

You are now a non-friend, an enemy, an outcast.

We shall meet again.

Country from my mom/grandparents. Indy/space rock from my dad. And then hard rock from the radio. Heavy metal from one or two of my friends. It's culminated in me listening to and liking basically all genres of Metal as a rule of thumb (except for black/death metal, but if it's a Black/something else (e.g. Black/drone or black ambient) or the like I might like it more), I'll listen to and I love some current/modern country (though, Johnny Cash still kicks the asses of all modern artists like nothing else), I like a lot of rock, and basically everything but hip-hop/rap, but there might be some of that that I'd listen to.

My dad listened to a lot of classical music when I was young. I liked it myself but there was a period where I shunned it completely. Now, and for a while already, I revel in the genre.

My brother used to listen to metal like Metallica and Iron Maiden. It has opened me to the genre a bit, and I can appreciate some artists.

My sister used to listen to triphop like Massive Attack. I though it was all a bit weird back then, but again, it has opened me up to the genre and I rather like it now.

My mother didn't listen to music a lot. She did have those weird cd's used for meditation. Some are pretty nice actually, but I suppose I haven't searched for those ones.

That about sums it up I guess.

My mum listens to the more Beach Boy era, my dad listens to things like The White Stripes.

I listen to In Flames, All That Remains and Bring Me The Horizon and other similar music.

So..

I'd say they didn't have much effect, unless you're listening to different Beach Boys to the ones I know XD

Well at the very least they interested me in rock, as opposed to hip hop and whatnot. They were fans of Boston, AC/DC (well, my dad was) Meatloaf, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, all your basic 70s and 80s groups. I don't really listen to the bands my parents did, aside from Pink Floyd and the occasional AC/DC. Honestly I've interested my dad in more bands than he interested in me in, namely Deadbolt, Tom Waits, The Dead Kennedys, and Slipknot.

My music tastes are nothing like anyone in my family's. Mom listened to easy-listening jazz (think elevator music jazz. Ugh) in the car if we were driving somewhere, but that was it. She doesn't like music that much.

If anything, school and friends influenced my music tastes. I started playing violin in 7th grade when I joined the school orchestra, and they got me listening to classical, and in high school in my French class we watched "Carmen," and that got me into opera. Before I got into opera, a friend introduced me to musicals, and I love musicals now. Another friend gave me Chinese pop mp3s, and now I'm a die-hard Jay Chou fan.

And proving how it must be a rule that all parents must hate the music their kids listen to, when I was in high school I was listening to a tape of Gregorian chants, and my mother yelled, "Turn that garbage down!"

My dad listened to stuff like Gloria Estefan and The Bangles (?!), so, needless to say, I didn't pick anything up from him. My mom had more of an influence - she listened to classic rock and blues stuff like Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, and Tracy Chapman. My stepdad liked Stevie Ray Vaughan and Aerosmith.

The biggest influence, though, was my sister. She introduced me to hard rock stuff like Rob Zombie, Korn, Godsmack, and Coal Chamber. She doesn't really like that kind of stuff now (she's more into R&B and dance music), but she started up my love of hard rock and metal.

My parents listened to a ton of country, and I love my parents, but I don't like much country music...
After I hit high school and stopped gaming quite so much, I got into a lot of stuff, but I don't much like metal or rap. Oh, and "whore pop" (brit. spears, etc.) But I like most everything else

My parents never really listened to music around me when I was a kid. Actually, my dad used to tell me that I would always say I didn't like music when I was younger.
I guess that's why my taste in music is so varied now. I like everything from rock, to hip-hop, to that 40's style music they play in Fallout 3.
Who doesn't like the 40's music in Fallout 3?

My family didn't really affect my music taste but my mom was a huge rock fan. When I was younger all I listened to was Sesame Street CD's but I'm more into metal now.

Well, my father is into rock, my mother into pop and my brother into weird electro-music.
I'd say my father had the most influence on me, considering I mostly listen to rock/hard rock.

My parents actually didn't influence me at all! I listen to the occassional bit of Bruce Springsteen from my dad and a little bit of Shania Twain from my mum and that's about it haha

I'm totally influencing my younger brother though. He asks me for recommendations all of the time and tends to enjoy a lot of the music I listen to

I feel so powerful >=D

I was COMPLETELY influenced by my older brother who was in a pop punk...The Get Up Kids style band, because of him I play the same instruments and listen to the same pop punk/Ska style of music.

Great question, I owe my brother alot it seems...
