I dont want to buy the fucking orange box, I just wanted to give TF2 a quick play this weekend. Call me an idiot but im kinda selective about what software I install on my hard drive. This looks like a ruse by steam to sign people up.
That's exactly what it is, it's a marketing campaign. The game is avaliable for pre-load now, but it's only playable over the weekend.

If you don't like it, I suggest you don't play it. It's quite a simple solution.

EDIT: And it's not US only, its worldwide. The free play period just hasn't started yet, it's only the pre-load period.

I believe the situation here is, that Valve is letting you pre-install TF2 now so when the weekend comes up you wont be wasting any of the weekends precious 48 hours of fun on waiting for the game to install.

In other words, you download it now then you can play it on the weekend, which will probably start at midnight Friday.

Then Valve shouldn't have 'FREE weekend on NOW' on their website cos that kinda makes me think 'oh right well that must mean that the free weekend they said was starting on thursday and today is friday is on now' silly me.

Valve you failed me.

Now you can stop trolling all over the place and triple posting and being a douche.

Ok to run with your sandwich analogy. Say someone comes up to you with a fucking delicious looking foot long sub, all gooey and bulging with meatballs and alot of your friends are saying 'this sub is good man' and the guy holding says: 'you can have a taste of this sandwich, for free, just give me your email address and install this software on your PC'.
Now, you might be a little seduced by those meatballs and your friends testimony to the sandwiches quality but when you go to take a bite you're just eating a DICK!
What? The steam install takes like five minutes at most. And it seems to run fine for just about everyone else. If you really hate Valve so much for letting you play TF2 for a free weekend, then go do something else. It's not like the software is going to give you a virus. It is from a legit company, with tons of people already on board.
Sure, the steam install takes a few minutes and while you're busy missing the point let me just say that if I offered to give you something for free and then reneged on that promise you'd be a bit pissed off no?
Well the thing is, it's not so much as Valve went back on their promise, but you are having problems with it. And you're probably not the only one. Since the update went live, I've heard that the servers have been flooded. I checked on Shacknews, and a bunch of people said that they were having problems playing. It will probably be corrected soon enough. And I'm pretty sure tons of Brits play TF2 (considering how big it is for PC Gamer UK). I doubt Valve would overlook such a large fanbase.

Betrayed :(

Why not have a message along the lines of 'hey you impatient shit heads, our servers are busy, just wait'.
I could live with that.

Screw messages from Valve, I think what you need is some Ritalin.

There's plenty of time to use the free server, have a little patience.

while i nearly always believe in the Big Labowski theory of too much swearing (what the fuck you talking about?) normally, you wouldn't use it to people who are trying to help you.

Here's a thought though, if you don't like valve, then don't buy their products? Sure they're giving it to you for free (because what could possibly be a bigger dick move then that?) but they're doing so in the hopes you'll enjoy it enough to purchase it from them.

Chill out bro.
1. Don't knock it till you've actually tried it.
2. The free part is this weekend, which it is as of yet not.
3. Don't complain about stuff you get for free.
4. I bought the game, have had it for months, but Steam is full right now. The biggest update since release just came out, and everyone who plays is trying to get on. I highly doubt Valve is giving preference to people who didn't pay a cent on their product.
5. Way to keep it classy.

Great?
Yeah. Great. He's exaggerating though. It's three really great games and two episodes of bonus content.
Team Fortress 2 = GREAT! One of the best team-based online multiplayer FPSs ever.
PORTAL = GREAT! Super innovative FPS/Puzzler, nothing like it anywhere.
Half Life 2= GREAT! One of the best single-player FPSs ever. With two episodes of bonus content.

This discourtesy is unspeakably ugly to me.
You've got problems, dude... and I don't mean problems playing TF2. They say that anger is its own punishment.

Dude, calm down. I'm having trouble seeing your problem. Is it that you have to download Steam? What did you expect, that's the point. Is it that you can't play the Free Weekend until the weekend? It's right there in the name. Are you mad that Valve is letting you play one of their most popular games for free? Lolwut? Or are you mad at something else and taking it out on Valve and TF2? That one seems the most likely.
