Disclaimer: This thread is directed towards people who actually own their music(in mp3 formats, or otherwise), not those who use iTunes and other such content-streaming/online playlist services.

I was just wondering, how do you arrange your music on your pc? For instance, do you make separate folders for the separate genres (i.e rock, rap, classical etc.) or do you just collect it into one folder? Or maybe you arrange it into some other categories, like 'new' and 'old', or 'music from movies' and 'music from games/animes', I dunno, tell me, I need to know! And, for that matter, which do you think is better? Arranging everything into separate folders, so it would be neat and tidy, like a good micro-managing office assistant boy, or just cluster-fucking it into one place and when you wanna listen to something, just search for it in winamp or whatever other player you use? Or maybe you have some other method? Please share your views on this high-priority topic.
Oh and for the record, I am from the micro-managing kind. I don't know why, maybe it's because when I want to listen to a particular piece of music, I would prefer to listen to another of the same kind afterwards. You know, if I decide on Mozart today, then how can I listen to 2pac afterwards? Just kidding, of course... I don't listen to hip-hop.

I tend to just have all my music on one folder n let Itoons sort it based on artist (which is how I like). I know you didnt really want opinion but I wanted to relate cause I do similar stuff with my art. I sort my art into digital and hand drawn aswell as fun pics and inspiring images. Then into different files types (psd, png, jpg). I do similar things with my illistrations, films, and animations.

WMP auto-alphabetises all of my music and for me, that's the easiest way to find something. As soon as I get a new shelf put in my room I plan on alphabetising my CD's as well. Really, trying to organise something by year or genre just seems like to much work, particularly the latter as there are a lot of bands that I'm not quite sure how to define and ultimately I don't really care about labels. So in short, I like to organise my music alphabetically.

However WMP decides to organize them. I don't give a shit how my music is organized as long as I can listen to it.

I don't. It's just a miasma of sound because I'm never really not in the mood for any song.

What I do is illegally download my music, put it into a program specifically made to make music organization more efficient, like, say iTunes or winamp, and when I need to look for a specific genre I just click the category and WALA, I'm listening.
Yay for you invoking mod-wrath!

OT: Generally I leave it sorted by artist. If I have compilations, I change the song title to include the artist and use "Various Artists" instead of the artist name.

I, uh, I have iTunes. Yeah, see, it alphabetises by artist.
My CD collection is also alphabetised by artist.

I have folders for certain artists/composers and albums that I know I will be listening to a lot.

Folders for certain occasions, like music for going to the gym, traveling music, and book reading music.

I also have folders for video game and anime music that I've collected over the years, and separate them into different folders to each game and show.

Very neat und tidy!

Artist->Album->Song

There are a few exceptions. For instance, video game, television, and movie soundtracks are often composed by several different artists.

It goes:
Soundtracks->Movies/TV/VG->Album->Song

Any collection of songs with less than three songs is just placed in Other.

I have different playlists for what mood I'm in.

Fast songs, slow songs, instrumentals, soundtracks, all songs, so on and so forth...

Music / Artists / A,B,C,D[footnote]The alphabet in sets of four[/footnote] / Their album/s / Songs

Also, "nonsta Mom" - Seriously, what the hell Captcha?

EDIT: Also Playlists are poopy. I use 1 playlist, to sieve what's put into my tiny 8GB iPod Nano.

I usually just pile them in, putting the name and artist who recorded it. In the end it doesn't matter, though, because I listen to my music with shuffle on the avoid the monotony of predictability.

Hmm, that seems very practical, I was thinking of doing the same, but the thing is that I have music which I don't listen to on a certain occasion, for instance music that I just listen to when I am bored, or when I genuinly want to listen to it, because I do have such moments. What do you then? Create folders for "When I am bored music" and "When I am in the mood for just listening to music... music"?

I have folders for different music types (J-pops, Dance etc) however these days I've gotten very lazy as all the new music files are just gather up in the music folder (can't be bother to move the files to the correct folders).

Every album I own I have on CD. So they're divided into MUSE (kept in a special drawer :D) and everything else (kept in my wardrobe).

The songs on my PC, i.e. all of those plus any I bought online, I keep organised by artist, and then by album, in the My Music folder.

And now you know!

I just have a folder for each band or artist that I listen to. And inside that folder they're separated by album title. Other than that, they're not really organized at all. I still make a point of putting all the songs in the correct folder just because it annoys me to see files laying around where they don't belong.
