lol, didn't realize the homeless had to be 'dealt with'.
If some guy in rags approaches you, demands or politely asks for change, how'd you handle the situation with the supposedly homeless person

That's what I meant, if you misunderstood me.
I usually give them change unless I know them to be a conperson. I don't usually work out I have been conned until afterwards.

"There you go, I will help you by buying this magazine at an outrageous £3."
"...wait a minute, was he wearing armani sunglasses?"

Generally it is best only to buy The Big Issue and thats it.

Build a rocket, spend about 100 billion on it, to make sure it would cost more than it would to build shelters and feed the homeless, then load all of them up and set a course for the heart of the sun. Problem solved!

Honestly.. you have to get to the root of the matter on why they cant/wont take care of themselves. Be it mental health issues, a string of bad luck, addiction, ect. Once you can overcome that hurdle the rest of it usually falls into place.

If I no they're not a conperson/addict then hells yeah. There's very few homeless in Iowa though, so the few their are are usually not addicts or cons, and the ones that are get exposed almost immediately.

I give them change if I have it. What's more, i'm not so arrogant and high-minded that i'll refuse to "pay for their habit". I'm doing a fellow human being an unconditional favour, not trying to judge them.

Sometimes i give them change, other times i don't.

Sometimes, i jump over 50 of them at a time with a skateboard.

And that's definitly not what you were going to spend your money on?

I enjoy a drink, I'd be a hypocrite to begrudge them one. I give change when I can, it's just charity with the bonus of being able to see where my money is going.

I've never run into any homeless people. I guess I'm lucky.

If I ever do, I'll just walk past them really fast and pretend I didn't see them.

If I can afford it and they are polite and sober, then yes, I will hand over some money, If they are polite and sober, but I am on a budget, I'll just have a short chat with them.

Other vote.

I first thought this thread was a general question, in which case I would have answered "Kill them, kill them all! Also, kill the elderly, and anyone else who doesn't pull their weight. [evil laugh goes here]", as it is.

I'd ignore them, if they get in my way I'd keep walking, I wouldn't move out there way.

I like the say hi option.

"Please I need change, please!"

"WASSUP!" *keep walking*

I don't even tip so extrapolate from that.

On the plus side (is this even a plus side?) I don't ignore homeless people as that's just rude. I do take exception to be told that I can "treat your girlfriend to one. Mistress [prehaps]?" by a Big Issue seller. There are at least three things wrong there.

I do feel sorry for them though. It has to be hard to have fallen through the cracks so far that you can't even see the light any more :(

...then I ignore that feeling, keep calm and carry on.

I'm not begging for money on the fucking street corner.
I already pay for them when the government takes a chunk from pay check.

When I was away in Thailand I bought a begger some food. If your really desperate you will ask for food not money.
Love that joke. I still quote it and laugh.

OT: Homeless people should work as video game testers. They have the time and the Game won't run away gagging because of the smell.

That's not entirely pertinent.

People like to think that they wouldn't end up the same way as these people, given the same circumstances. It just occurs to me, that maybe I would be unemployable if I had spent my formative years being abused, violently or sexually...whatever...I just think it may have affected my ability to concentrate in maths class. Hell, I come from a nice background and I still squandered my eduaction with a generally indifferent disposition.

I don't think reasons for being homeless, or what they spend any money given to them on, is really anyones business. Give or don't give, either is cool with me, let's just not be judgemental.

Well, aren't you lovely.

First of all, it's extremely arrogant of you to assume the homeless are all alcoholics. I wouldn't begrudge anyone a drink anyway, homeowner or not.

Second of all, nothing out of your paycheck goes to individual people on the street. Donating to a shelter or giving change to someone is a voluntary act of charity.

Thirdly, I checked your profile, and you're just a kid. You probably have a paper round or some shit, and you certainly don't pay tax. Don't even dare to sit there, in front of the computer that your parents probably bought for you, espousing that bullshit as if you actually deserve anything more than these people. Not everyone is as priviledged or as lucky as you, and you *are* priviledged and lucky.
