Rarely gotten scared in games.
But if they ever put a dentist in a video game, i would probably play the game with closed eyes whenever theres a dentist scene.

like many of you i cannot wait for Skyrim im trying to know as little about the game as possible so i enjoy it more by exploration means. Anyway when i watched the original trailer there was something that me and many others were made quite upset.

im talking about 'Spider's' i am FUCKING SCARED OF SPIDERS. i couldn't beat Twilight princess due to that bloody spider and the worse part was how they fell from the ceiling.

Forest temple: cool this will be fun dum dun dum oh look a big room [walks forward] Spider: 'SUP BRO'. Trezu has Fainted.

anyway i have decided that everyday i will look up screen shots of Skyrim Spiders in till im not scared of them. when i see him i cover my eyes but covering your eyes is alright when u have a machine gun, but a sword nope.

in the hopes that i get over my fear of Giant Spiders in games, but i still hope that Spider's won't be a frequent enemy in skyrim.

Also what is your fear and how do you deal with it when you play a video game?
I feel your pain man, I was playing DA:O on the 360 (it was like $14) and I have a fear of spiders, got to the part with the elves, muted my TV, paused the game and sat scared shitless for a minute, then started again and repeated that method every time one of those fuckers came from the ceiling.

I have a fear of Utility Droids, cold soulless machinery the beeps, the boops, the steel heart... and to this day I have never played Knights of the Old Republic again.

But seriously I'm scared of Argoninans and real life lizards, so when an Argonian Rouge jumps out of nowhere I just blast them with fireballs.

I don't think I've ever gotten scared of a game. Maybe startled by a sudden noise, but never scared.

spiders I hate 'em!
they've never stopped me from playing a game though, I do the same thing I do in real life to kill them "run away and shoot at them" the latest Castlevania though I hated having to fight/ride those blasted things and now you got me thinking about them DAMN YOU OT!

I use a gun, and if that don't work, I use more gun.

Incidentally this is the reason that Amnesia is the only game I've ever played that has scared the ever loving fuck out of me, there is no gun.

If that fails, run like hell. Having always held a fear of big underwater monsters like Dianoga, I can take solace that dry land is a safe haven. Usually.

I used to be absolutely terrified of going underwater in games, who knows what creepy thing is lurking down there! I had to get my dad to play parts of Ape Escape because there were sharks in the water and a big as fish that would shock you if you went in the water.

But i am now over that thanks to Monster hunter tri and having spent quite a few hours underwater trying to get Lagiacrus pieces.

The best way to counter fears in a video game is to break immersion and remember that's its just a bunch of pixels and polygons. If that doesn't work then go to your computer, ipod, etc. and play Yakkety Sax. I dare you to feel fear while listening to that.

You know, if you are really that scared of spiders, you could always play Penumbra: Overture. I hear that game teaches all about spiders and how they could never do any real harm to a human being. [/ReversePsychologyBastard]

Only heights for me. And in all my games where I've ever been that high up, I've never felt powerless. Like, Dead Space 2 had a sequence, but I knew at the end of that fall I'd be fine, unlike say Mirror's Edge, where if I fall, I go splat. I've never felt in a state where the heights make me fearful. Is always too campy, or too "OMG bro this is so badass" or just a game that is against the notion of being tense.

I'd actually like to encounter a game where I really have to deal with that. I've only got two such games to my memory that did anything along those lines, and it was only tense because of the plot, not gameplay.

Actually, playing video games is usually how I deal with my fears. It's how I've gotten over my fear of open water and of bugs. Though I still get uncomfortable around spiders.

I couldn't keep playing amnesia: the dark descent in the jail level (arguably the scariest part of the game) until I grabbed a barrel buddy. I originally grabbed this barrel as mobile cover to help looking around corners. Within a couple minutes of carrying it around, I was talking to it like a companion cube, and I became fearless, going so far as to run up to a monster and chuck the barrel at it then run away laughing (after hiding until the monster wandered off, I got barrel buddy back).

I think Valve really came up with something special in assigning a personality to an inanimate object. They are more comforting than any real co-op player.
That sounds like an adorable plan. I'll have to try that out while I'm playing Penumbra.

I usually deal with fear by pausing and going off to make a sandwich. Eating sandwiches (particularly fairy bread) makes things a little happier.

Repeating happy things like a mantra helps too. Things such as "Butterflies, shining rainbows, frolicking ponies, sunshine, colourful monkeys" are a happy distraction.

I also always sing a song out of context to really clash with the scary atmosphere. Being chased by an evil alien/monster/zombie/axe-wielding-madman and singing the Pokemon theme song is a great help. :D
