My thoughts on anime are just a big fat meh. Anime is hit or miss with me.
My thoughts exactly. I like Black Lagoon and hate GL. It's simply a matter of are these characters relatable and if not is the story good. BL, is a parody of hard core action movies, it takes all the action movie clechés and cranks them up to 11. GL on the other hand is an unneedly over the top, comedy, the ham handedness of which it's voiced is nasuaziting. Ex: in GL we are introduced to 2 characters a hyperactive jackass and a manic depressive teat, very few people can relate. I look down are a lot of anime fans because they watch whatever ANN recommends.

I may not know anime, but I know what I like. I actually like anime, but my tastes run fairly narrow. Case Closed and DBZ are my crack. That said, I do want to buy the Queen's Blade box set. So....yeah.

For all of you who won't give it a chance, though, I have an article a friend of mine wrote that I think is relevant to this thread.

http://www.thespoonfeed.com/why-after-only-two-episodes-you-will-love-anime/
I'm sorry, but I could not get into that at all. As soon as he said we were wrong, I lost all interest. No offense to you, but it is these people who drive me away. The ones who presume to know what is best, and how everyone else is wrong because they don't agree with them.
That seems fair, although a bit quick to judge an article by its opening paragraph.
Well, to be honest, I did read the whole thing through, and my assumptions based on that first paragraph were justified. I can't stand people like that.
Fair enough, then.

I'm really starting to hate it...with a passion.
Really?

...huh. Well I love it. There's nothing for me to hate about it because I'm very selective about what I watch. 90% of it is shit, but 90% of everything is shit.

However I need to quote this person for putting into words what I couldn't when I was asked by my Media teacher some years ago why anime is good:

Tsaba said:
Anime, is one of those things capable of going places movies or TV's can't or it can go too far, which makes it a make it or break it situation.

I enjoy many series and there are others I can't stand.

Series like this I think pull it off though, crazy, but, not too crazy.
And I quote you because I'm still trying to understand what the fuck I just watched.

As in every medium, 98% of it is pure, unfettered crap. But there are diamonds in the rough. If all you know of anime is Dragonball, Bleach, Ranma 1/2 or Cardcaptor Sakura, then you're going to have a too-narrow view of the medium as a whole. However, for those who have yet to like the medium, but have an open mind, movies such as Princess Mononoke (or, really, anything that Studio Ghibli has ever done... beware of Grave of the Fireflies), and Ghost in the Shell; OVAs like Samurai X; and TV series like Vision of Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Clannad are well worth your while and may tip you into acceptance, if not into fandom.

Also, if you aren't sobbing like a little girl by the 9th episode of Clannad, then you have no soul.

WH40k fans, or at least the more extreme ones (I've argued with some before, never again...), strike me as the redneck jock douchebags of nerds; they dismiss most things that dare to use colors or optimism as "gay" one way or another, go on about how hardcore their franchise is, and generally do the kind of "mature x for mature xers" dickwaving most of us, worst case scenario, moved past in middle school. I think I'll stick to Fallout for my dark, constantly at-war universes.
'Tis funny because 40k used to be less grimdark. It was always dark, but it's only after the takeover when they started to focus more on the teen market that it changed to be as dark and serious as it is now.

Also, colours and optimism are gay. It's a scientifically proven fact >.>
My understanding is that the grimdark was supposed to be comedic; of course a universe where chronic genociders are the good guys isn't serious.

I dislike 98 percent of all anime. I can't stand most of it, but if I like an anime, I really like it. For me it's love it or hate it.

I've only just started watching anime, I'm halfway through Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni at the moment. And it's completely awesome.

I have Serial Experiments Lain lined up next... that should be VERY different.
Higurashi... It's like fish: Good for awhile, but it starts to stink quickly.

I dislike 98 percent of all anime. I can't stand most of it, but if I like an anime, I really like it. For me it's love it or hate it.

Example: I LOVE Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and HATE (Loathe) Excel Saga.

I like anime. I just hate anime that has a crappy transition between manga and anime. Or when they add some random arc that has nothing to do with the story line.

Hate it, it's so cheap, so tacky, the pace is far too slow in some. One Piece, and DragonBall spring to mind. Each episode is 22 mins, 3 mins intro song, 3 mins recap of what happened in the last episode, so only about 14 mins is on the actual episode, 2 mins for outro song too.
So your opinion on anime is based entirely on your perceptions of the most popular series? That's mindless stereotyping and is exactly the same sort of thing as someone saying they dislike games because they're all the same as CoD and Halo.
But it's true though, even a less popular series such as Noir suffers from the same characteristics, which I have a genuine DVD copy of, which I bought about 9 years ago. Neon Genesis, Deathnote (good at the start but turned to shit after episode 23), Bleach, the list goes on and on. Sailor Moon is a joke, just see what the bad guy looks like for that episode then move on, they always kill them using the same method anyway.

In one whole episode of One Piece, I swear to God all that happened in that space of 14 minutes, was a general launched an attack at an army causing a huge tsunami to wipe them out, then some guy freezes the tsunami, bit of chatting, banter, cliffhanger, end of episode. 2 whole minutes was dedicated to the camera panning the army, showing their horrified faces as they stared at the tsunami. TWO MINUTES!!! That's taking the piss, how can people expect me to watch this garbage? And the fact that people so eagerly wait a week for each episode, is just laughable.

95% of anime is complete crap. the better stuff is usually older (i.e. Ninja Scroll, Akira, etc.)
QFT, the older stuff which is better, because I have alot of Dr. Slump, Chibi Maruko-chan, Goldfish Warning, and the good old Doraemon cartoons on VCD which DO NOT suffer from the characteristics previously mentioned. The pace is faster, the ideas were original and creative, the jokes are not only in the visuals (overused fall-face-first-onto-floor "joke"), but more importantly in the dialogue.

Art looks ok, but...
According to that anime said:
Although only in high school, the brilliant Takuya is working as a physicist at an Alliance scientific facility sponsored by the United States' National Security Agency
...that's another thing that bugs me...I'm pretty sure no high school student works for the NSA in real life. Worst part is, most of those stories (basing myself on Final Fantasy here, that's as close to anime I got) would work perfectly well with adult characters: FF VIII would still have worked if Squall and co. were 25 (Except for Quistis, who should be at least 35 - she teaches in an elite military academy and she's 18 for fuck's sake)

SO basically, I'm looking for an anime that doesn't use the manga style and doesn't feature "angsty androgynous teenagers killing Satan", to quote Yahtzee. Does that exist?

EDIT:

Assuming Google is right and this comes from Elfen Lied, you didn't quite catch my point.

My favorite one. The intro is so awesome.

More On Topic: Yeah there pretty sweet. Though I think that most people posting on this are either people who love anime or absolutely detest it. Those who don't really care for it probably won't post.

So you're looking for something that is the animated equivalent of real life? With nothing that's even remotely unlikely to be true in it? I can't help you there. I'm sure it exists, but it's not the sort of thing I have any interest in.

Not to be a dick, but what sort of games do you play if you can't even suspend your disbelief for an anime that has one teenage character (about 18-19 or so I think he is) in the not-too-distant future who is a genius and works at the NSA?

I hate it personally, I really wish I could like it, but there's just so much stupid shit. Also I know too many pedo-weaboos, so I've been turned off of it even more.

I'm a big Anime fan, but the overlap between games in anime for me is I'm a JRPG fan. Anything beyond that I couldn't tell you why I like it dood.
