Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. It is most commonly performed on newborn males (obviously).
I personally approve of it it (but don't disagree if parents or whatever opt not to) for the simple reason that it is a better-looking penis. Seriously, uncircumcised penises look like a worm trying to escape from mud.
Yes it is painful for the baby, possibly more painful than an adult would experience. However, I don't remember any pain from when I was circumcised because I can't remember anything before age 5. I'm grateful that my mother wanted me to have a good-looking penis.
I don't care about the health advantages/disadvantages or any religious practice of it but I personally approve. What about my fellow Escapees?

I have two boys and each of them are circumcised. They were medicated beforehand and honestly I don't think they even really felt anything. And I agree with the OP that it makes for a better looking penis. Though I have no issue if you do or don't have it done. Also oddly, this is the second circumcision thread I've seen on the Escapist.

Well genital mutilation is considered a human rights violation when its done to women, and I believe in equality between genders. If you want to take a knife to your own genitals that's fine though.

I just find it to make a penis look better. The baby isn't traumatized and I have no vietnam flashbacks because of mine so I'll just decide to have my boys circumcised.

There is absolutely no reason to.
And fucking aesthetics is NOT a valid reason to chop part of their dick off. Why don't you let them grow up a little and then decide if they want a "better-looking penis".

Though really, I think it should be illegal.

Female genital mutilation is done to remove a woman's ability to feel sexual pleasure - it isn't merely decorative. The male version would be smashing the testicles to create a eunuch.

OT: I've never slept with a guy who had his foreskin intact. So I guess I like circumcisions? They do look nice.

Um... why?

A newborn can't remember the pain and heals in days - whereas an adult must go through several weeks of painful recovery.

Also, how is circumcision different from pierced ears or a tattoo?

If you don't care for it, that's fine, but why so... passionate about this topic?

I see no reason for it, yes there were health advantages in the medieval times because people wouldn't wash and their dicks would rot off, so maybe if you have severe hygienephobia...

I'm going to have to disagree with you. There are plenty of medical reasons to have a male circumcised:

http://www.who.int/hiv/pub/malecircumcision/infopack_en_3.pdf

http://www.who.int/hiv/pub/malecircumcision/infopack_en_4.pdf

These are info packets from the World Health Organization, which I think we can agree upon is a reliable source for this kind of information. I'll tell you to read the links if you want a list of all the health benefits of male circumcision but some of the highlights are:

-Decreases the chance of urinary tract infections of babies/children
-Decreased instances of cervical cancer in female sexual partners
-Ease of penile hygiene leading to fewer infections
-Lower rate of sexually transmitted infections
-Lower rate of penile cancer
-Helps prevent the spread of HIV

Now, I will agree that it is a choice, but I don't think that it should be either illegal or mandatory. I personally am very happy my parents had me circumcised.

2. I don't remember the pain.
rebuttal: If someone was raped using a roofie, does it matter? Even if they don't remember?
Your logic is equally flawed.

rebuttal: An infant lacks the ability to convert short-term memory into long-term memory. They also heal faster (because they are still growing rapidly) than an adult would. That means that their pain passes more quickly, and is forgotten without becoming a part of their personality.

Whereas rape, even while unconscious, is a terrible and scarring experience due to the feeling of violation. Just knowing you have been raped is terrible, even if an individual can't remember it. Also, even while asleep, an adult brain still records data - it still transfers that data to long-term memory. So even if you're raped in your sleep, part of that experience is retained.

So an infant will truly forget, whereas an adult cannot truly forget. Hence your point is not valid.

This is a legitimate thread and all you have to do is post your opinion. If you disagree, that's fine, but no sense in overreacting.

I think it is a holdover from a less clean time (when it actual had a practical purpose) that only remains acceptable because it is backed by some big religions.

I don't like it. I don't think it should be done unless it is absolutely medically necessary for the child in question.

I don't say it very often, but "This".

Why don't you let them grow up a little and then decide if they want a "better-looking penis".
I assume it is because if they left the choice up to the boys when they grow up they would be pretty set in the concept of "don't allow any damage to my penis... ever" which would make the near universal answer be somewhere between "no" and "no" (but with lots of swearing).

Also, although I disagree with the practice, at least they are doing it at a point in the kid's life where he won't have any memory of it happening.

They really aren't comparable. FGM's equivalent for males would be castration, not circumcision.

Edit: I worded something really poorly and had to fix it. (the beginning of the reply to "Why don't you let them grow up...", more specifically)

So it would be ok if your parents branded your ass?
And put piercings on you, or the circumcision equivalent would be just chopping your ear off because they prefer that look.

I think it's pretty inhumane to damage your children, particularly in that way

for the record, the skin in that area is what conducts nervous messages to the brain about what's going on down there it is very easy to damage them, or completely destroy them in that process because they are in the skin layer and a vast array of other problems
a quick google will find you a little documentation on the subject

http://www.noharmm.org/IDcirc.htm

my question is is it really worth risking any of this for any reason?

what is the possible gain?

if evolution put a protective layer of skin there there's a damned good reason!

you might as-well cut off their ears in-case they get cold in winter, and screw it, the flap of skin holding your thumb on reduces dexterity so chop that off too..

you're mutilating them, however you want to word it.
