I'm sure all of us have had a friend that illegally downloads games, either through torrents or some other file-sharing client. Or, maybe you've done it yourself. What are your thoughts on this?

Just about everybody on the escapist looks down on it

There are a few people that tend to put down pirating links though... they get put on probation a lot

If it makes people like EA use DRM, its bad.
I think the fact that you are stealing something is worse than a company doing what they want with their product.

I think it's pretty shallow, if you don't want to pay for someone elses effort and work then you don't deserve to play it. Not having money or hating EA or whatever is not a valid excuse.

I can count the amount of games I have pirated on one hand. The thing is though I ended up buying these games later anyways because I enjoyed them and became less skeptical about spending the money for them. To me pirating has always been a "full length demo" :)

This. The sole exception is for Mother 3, which can't actually be obtained legally in English. Even so, I'm going to be buying some Mother 3 merchandise or maybe even buy a copy of the game itself.

Well, what about games that are hard to find. My friend down loaded Arcanum, simply because he couldn't find a copy.

I have a rule for pirating games: if it is more than 5 years old, it's fair game. Unethical? Probably. Illegal? Most certainly. Evil? +10 DSP.

But I don't lose any sleep over it.

yea I'm sort of the same way in that extent. I don't see the problem with doing it on games that are at least 2 console generations old. No one is really making big money, if not any money off of it so why not show appreciation for the game by still playing it?

Nope, I don't remain friends with anyone who does this. It is theft, and I find it particularly vile as I am someone who hopes to make a living by producing the kinds of things these people imagine they have a "right" to take without compensation.

It feels good as I don't have to give my money to the rip off artists known as Electronics Boutique.

for me its a meh. I've become quite independent from my parents, I bike everywhere or walk, never ask them to drive me, prepare my own meals and all, clean up after myself too. However my parents hate that I game, in fact my mother hates technology in general, much less my $500 PC I just got to play the latest games. So thanks to ESRB, I need to be 17 to get an "Mature 17+" game, OR, have a parent with me. First option, no, I'm only 16, second, also a no, my family goes to the mall with me maybe once a year. Even then, there's only been one time my parents bothered to fufil my request and help me get Quake 4. The only option is beg for it for christmas and hope I get the right game. That's one game a year, so I then pretty much have to pirate a few games.

I'd like to make it clear that my parents know me as a mature person, even my friends do, they jokingly call me "the square" cause I try to always do what I feel is correct and polite and I also usually turn down drinking and such, so it's not that I'm not allowed to play these games, my parents just feel gaming is a waste of time, not that they talk about it, but I can pick up a hint.

I've been toying with the idea of going in and buying all the games I liked that I've pirated, that would be 5, all the ones I've pirated in my life ;)
However, I don't feel guilty about pirating in the slightest unless its a company that's earned my respect (ID software and Crytek), those two, I'll never pirate from. I waited 2 years for a chance to get Quake 4 the legit way and I don't regret the wait.

Pirating is no better than walking into a store and taking the game right off the shelf without paying for it. PC games aren't even all that expensive to begin with, I'd rather just legally obtain a game, than run the risk of getting caught pirating it.

Now I don't like it, any more than you men, but what we have here, is a failure to communicate.

I don't really care. I've never downloaded a game or music illegally, but if I had the chance I would.
