How do YOU ignore pain?

I swear profusely when I first get hurt (or try to, if my kids are the room. Not uncommon for me to stub my toe, and only be able to go "ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff".

After the initial shock, I just take a deep breath, and tell myself "A Jedi knows no pain" (I know, I'm a dork) until I have a handle on it.

I forget to clip my nails, so I often have long nail. I just jam my thumb nail into my index finger and give myself some other pain to focus on.

I poke and prod!

Yeah, sure pain hurts like hell, but it's just a feeling. If you can rationalise it through curiosity, it seems to dull it to a bearable level. Just shrug your shoulders, open the wound, peer inside and then fill it with superglue!

I get hurt all the time at work (in a bodyshop, lots of sheet metal, cuts, scrapes, bruises etc..), over the past five years, I've toughened up a lot. It takes a pretty serious injury for me to stop what I'm doing now!

It all began at the point I was run over by a 54 seater coach. Hurt like a ************, but once the pain's there, you just have to overcome your mind, which is your own worst enemy if you can't control it.

If someone else is hurting me, I pretend to get off on it, they fuck off pretty quickly, while I moan in ecstacy till they are out of eye and earshot, then continue conversation.

Emotional pain? Bottle it up!

Ignore pain? No. Ignoring pain is stupid, you're body is in pain for a reason. Something is causing you harm.

Understand the pain so that I can prioritize and work through it? Yes.

I.e. FUCK my arm hurts! Hmm, I appear to have impaled it with an arrow. Ignoring this would be foolish. Instead, I will acknowledge the arrow, as I am now aware of what my body is trying to tell me, and I will make haste to correct this intrusion upon myself.
Who the hell has ever fired an arrow at you?

Anyway, I'm usually the one causing the pain ;). Nah, but seriously, I don't have a great pain threshold, though I love causing physical pain I can't tolerate it much myself. Weird how I write stories about psychos and sadists and then can't tolerate even a cut on my arm. I don't even like needles :p.

I just swear loads, anyway, and if it's a headache I dose myself up on Ibuprofen. Works wonders :)

Grit my teeth, followed by a grunt, then a random jumble of quiet swears. depending on the pain, if it's not so bad and quick, i just close my eyes and take a deep breath, it works.

Meditation. Mind over matter. I was at my MMA class, and we did pain meditation. Where 4 guys beat you with sticks, and you take it. Ahh. Glorious.

Perhaps unfortunately, I don't. I actively embrace it, sometimes to the point of wallowing in it. Physical pain is nothing to emotional trauma.

I picture myself on a tropical island, bathing in the sun; the soft crash of the waves nearby, sipping on a cold beer and listening to Weezer's "Island In The Sun".

Works like a charm. I've used it through needles, piercings, tattoos (although I kind of like the pain of tattoos now), giving blood, impact damage, etc. Several people have commented on my pain tolerance / absorbtion.

I don't ignore it, I embrace it. Pain is one thing that lets me know I'm still alive. In a sense, I view it as a good thing.
Very Sith of you.

I do the same thing.

I just endure it and sometimes bite my tongue but mostly I just keep thinking, "it's only an emotion". Which works most of the time.

What is this stuff about people "embracing" pain? Seriously a lot of masochists here.

OT:
I usually just ignore it. It's a matter of will. I have extreme pain tolerance, to the point where doctors have consistently misdiagnosed me for lack of some sort of reaction when poking a hurt limb.

I also only very rarely visit the doctor, and walked around on a broken ancle for three weeks.

I take pride in not displaying weakness when hurt. I will not flinch, I will not clench my fists. I may lose a fight, but I won't cry when my arm gets broken. I will keep coming.

You have to take pride in something, I suppose :)
