For me it is more genre related. For a shooter I want good graphics, sound, and a bunch of stuff to blow up. Story is not essential.

In an RPG it goes story/characters, innovation and superb graphics are nice but not needed to make it good.

controversially I use the 'how good it is' method. which is sort of every aspect of it together then theirs probably some formula for it.

I've come to realize that I often judge games by their music.
I may like a shitty game because the music is awesome, and I might avoid a better one because the music sucks.

I'm one of those picky critics who look at everything. Graphics, Gameplay, Story, Value For Money but recently I've been tending to lean more towards Originality

I don't really care about graphics. Final Fantasy VII and Morrowind are some of my favorite games of all time. As for gameplay vs story, I've yet to find a game with a perfect balance of the two. Sometimes, one of them being good enough can make up for the other being terrible.

Basically, any gameplay thats fun. It doesnt hav to be completely innovative or new or anything. I like a good soundtrack and an interesting but not too involved storyline. And most of all i like options. Like customizables, user created content and lots of choices and well....options.
Graphics are always a bonus, but they dont make the game.
And whether or not it has a multiplayer is their choice but if it does, it should be good. REALLY good. And if not they should hav more time to focus on the gameplay alone.

-Easy to pick up and play (I've a short attention span)
-Easy to understand (anything with stats loses me)
-Takes no longer than 20 hours to complete (half of that if preferable)
-When it's plot driven I like my actions, missions, next objectives not to be filler
-graphics that are at least pretty enough (if it has its own style it can get away with bad graphics though)
-A decent sound track (which pretty much automatically removes 95% of all Western video games out of the equation)
-If it's a PC game, a demo please

P.S. I don't know why so many have to make a point that a game has to be 'fun'. Surely that goes without saying?

It's the basic theory of reletivity.
A great game can be played for hours but feel like only a few minutes have past.
A poor game can be played for minutes but seem to drag on for hours.

A good game is one where I can immerse myself, make me think and enjoy my time.

A simple, 2D game can do that just as well as complex, big-budget 3D one.

If a game makes me not wanting to get luanch or go to bed, then I consider it fine.

All the stuff you guys said certainly matters alot but...

Music, I love a game with a good soundtrack.
I forgot about that one... Yes, music is very important to a game- I'll always remember how great it was to see the opening sequence in Oblivion or Fable and say to myself, "That wouldn't have been one tenth as cool if it didn't have good music."
