The only reason I can think of is this:

Maybe they have kids and hey broke it while the disc is in the console or pc?
Unless they are the old games where you had a big box with a plastic case inside with the game in it. Then I can imagine someone just losing the box since they only use the cd in the little case.

On a side note, I am proud to admit I've never lost any cds or cases :). I came close to losing a manual once, but it turned out my brother had been looking through it and didn't give it back...

A lot of these people steal the games from other people or lose the cases when they get kicked out of the low-income apartments for the third time in five years. Either that or they smoke a bunch of grass and misplace the case for HALO or whatever other floating-fun game they get high and play after a long hard day of working the fry station.

Yeah, just look at the gamecube.
There the same size as the ps2, 360 and XBOX cases. PSX and PS1 had the right cases, there thicker to house the booklet but they were just tall enough the hold the disk.
Yeah, but PS2, 360 & Xbox cases are DVD size, and considering they contain DVDs, is slightly acceptable.

But gamecube used mini DVDs and still used DVD sized cases. There are mini DVD sized cases for mini DVDs. Still, I agree with PSX/1 getting the boxes right. PS3 are getting there I suppose, which is always nice to know.
It doesn't really make sense, in this age global warming paranoia it's wierd to see game companies use boxes that are too big for there contents.

You might want to be wary of using that avatar, one of this sites biggest/oldest posters uses it.

It pisses me off even more when people write all over the case/game disc/cartridge.

Yeah, but I only said it was slightly acceptable.

Also, I will change it, thanks.

Ive lost manuals before, not the game case, some people are very iresponsible with their stuff, ive seen people leave there discs just lying there, collecting dust, it saddens me.
my little brother does that and it angers me because some games don't work anymore
