It depends entirely on the situation and whatever mood I'm in. I tend simply to say America or "the US", though.

The United States, the U.S or occasionally "those guys with guns who live down south.".
We're not all to the South of you! What about Alaska?
'Sides, "those guys down south" makes it sound like we're all cannibalistic inbred hillbillies who live in a swamp.

That's not us, that's just Mississippi and Kansas.
Not Kansas. Arkansas. Get it right.

OT: I say United States and type U.S.

The U.S., or The States, sometimes just America if I feel lazy, but of course I call it's citizens Americans. What else can I call them?

The US.

Mostly.

Depends on sentence length. Don't want them to run on too long, you see.

Seeing as I'm not american it depends what language I'm speaking at the time.
If I'm speaking english I'll say either "The US" or "America". If I'm speaking something else I'll probably say "Usa" or, again, "america"

"The U.S."

The people here are, of course, "Americans". But I don't call this country "America", and "USA" sounds too patriotic. I hate this fucking place, so I'm sure not patriotic.
