Lying down. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitle3zaap0y7ym6o]

But seriously, I usually read a book.

Be warm and cozy. After that just close your eyes, everything will come naturally.

....unless you have sudden insomnia.

I live in England and if it doesn't rain (which I personally find great to listen to) I whack on http://www.rainymood.com/ which sounds really peaceful.

Just leave it on quietly in the background and well, there you go.

Also I try to think of the most random crap before I nod off to spur on a really fun dream. Good luck!

I sleep by turning off the lights, laying in my bed, pulling the covers up to my neck, and closing my eyes. I'm usually out in five minutes.

Lately as soon as my head hits the pillow I pass out. I am over worked and underpaid. It's a shitty living but I get by.

Yeah, the rain suggestion is a great one, but unfortunately my PC is in another room and only has headphones, and not speakers.

Likewise, I don't have a television in the room I sleep in, so documentaries are out too :(

Sometimes I try reading to get to sleep - it used to calm my mind so I could drowse, but nowadays the moment the book is closed my mind just ramps back up to full speed.

In descending order of effectiveness:

1) A member of the opposite sex in bed with me. We don't even have to have sex---sometimes just the rhythm of her breathing is enough to lull me to sleep. Of course, within this category, sex -> cuddling -> just her being there, in order.

2) A rerun of Friday Night Fights on ESPN3.com. Don't ask me why, but for some reason the ebb and flow and rhythm of the sport of boxing and the sound of the commentators is relaxing enough that it usually overcomes my horribly overactive mind.

3) Sleeping pills. Like the OP, I'm practically immune to them. You could probably give me a dose that would kill a modest-sized elephant and I'd be like "can't sleep, fuck."

4) Unusual sleep timing. If I sleep 4 hours in the morning (from 5:30 to 9:30, at which point I have to get up for school) then take a 4-hour nap in the afternoon after I get home, it seems to work for sleeping 8 hours a day.

5) Actually going to bed at a reasonable hour. Damn overactive mind! On the bright side, I've solved video game puzzles in that half-asleep state, but that just means I get up and play the games. Back to square one.

I put my headphones on, turn on some quiet music with the lights off and just close my eyes. Then I try to pay attention to nothing but the music and the lyrics. It usually helps.

Try putting something really boring on tv. Like a political show then right before you fall asleep tun off the tv and go to bed. That's what I do when I can't sleep.

Specifically, I bought a better mattress recently which helps, found a worn pillow that's comfy (new are too stiff), I leave a fan running to create "white noise" and if I'm still awake I read alot until i'm drowsy or watch youtube videos. Lack of activity helps too, like not playing games or doing much an hour before bed. Food will make you tired too but that'll slow your metabolism a bit which isn't good for losing weight.

Sometimes I listen to relaxing music or hypnosis stuff, which puts me to sleep.

I don't mean, 'do you sleep well'? I mean... how do you manage it? I'm sat here at 4am and I meant to be in bed a couple of hours ago, but I can't sleep. I'm not even drowsy - so if I'm not ready to be in bed in 30 minutes after I've drank my hot chocolate, I'm downing a sleeping tablet - even though half of one knocks my girlfriend unconscious, a whole one for me only guarantees 3 hours or so of sleep, so it's not an ideal solution.

So yeah - what do you lot do to secure unconsciousness? I've tried the 'lying there til you fall asleep' but that's a pretty boring way to spend 3 hours if you ask me, so I'm looking for alternate answers.

*waits to see how many posts it takes to get an answer that rhymes with masticate*
Cannabis addiction. I don't so much fall asleep as pass out.

I have a political comedy with a reading level in the stratosphere sitting beside my desk if I'm struggling to sleep. Two or three chapters of that tends to work. The Bible works well enough too.

If I'm having trouble sleeping I'll usually put my iPod on and play some instrumental music, usually post-rock of some kind. Doesn't seem to have worked tonight though, since it's just after 5:30am and I'm still here.

Masturba...

Never mind that won't help...

I wish I could help but I seem to have the same problem. All I try to do is bore myself to sleep but hardly ever works so I just go till I crash.
