I think that first contact will be very not good. Think about past events where supposedly more advanced, more intelligent beings met with the native inhabitants of a distant exotic land.
I do remember when in WW2 the US came over to some islands in the pacific to set up shop for some bombing of Japan and the natives were given cans of beans and corn for their troubles. The natives thought they were gods, developed a religion around it, built model planes in hope that the aircrafts would return and bring more canned food.

I sure hope that if a first encounter was based off previous Earth encounters it was based off this one!
Are you sure it already hasn't? Did I just blow your mind, or what?

Probably, not...
No, watch this:

That's over an hour long, I don't have attention span for that. But, yeah, I use to be into that sort of thing as a kid. Honestly, I do think aliens are a semi-logical explanation for angels and the like. You know cave drawings and what have you...

Yeah I wasn't expecting you to watch it all, but yeah, it's an interesting theory... damn you aliens for putting us through all that chaos with your arrival, starting religions which kept science at a stand still for centuries.
Holy crap that was their plan the whole time, to impede the progress of science. Damn them indeed...

Let's hope so! And let's hope that they don't know much about the 1490's...

I would also accept a first contact that grants people superpowers, a la Green Lantern.

Realistically: we find single or multi-cell organisms on our first manned mission to Mars.

Hopefully: They arrive like they do in "V" but they're cool and not evil lizard people wearing human-suits.

Wow, okay that kinda blew my mind... intentional sabotage of our intelligence. Crazy... That would make a fantastic plot line for a Sci-Fi film!
Or a SyFy film, wait, no, please no...

As long as they don't want our souls, opted out of the new "V" when we got to that crap...

Extermination shall ensue. But earth shall kick ass because it's the greatest planet in the universe.
It's true, we humans are that awesome.

Probably some kind of long wave comm center we happen to get into contact with.
Weirdest scenario that could possibly happen, its some form of intergalactic porn network xD

Likely scenario: They're not fully sentient beings, Hell, might not even be multicellular.

First thing everyone is gonna think when we meet equally sentient or more advanced life: Can we fuck it?
Oh god, you just had to remind me about some of the dumb people on this planet...wait, didn't they do stuff like that it District 9 where they had inter species prostitution or something akin to that?

Forlong said:
We should have them watch "The Dark Knight", so that they know just how awesome a species we are.
Nah, we need them to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann instead, show them the power of human spirit to overcome great odds.

Anyways, on topic. I think we would have something thats more related to Star Ocean, with the UnderDeveloped Plant Preservation Pact, in which we are not a fully developed civilization due to us not being able to go to other planets and back in one piece and that we have yet to make contact with another race.

I doubt we will ever contact intelligent beings. If the universe were the size of the Earth, we'd be able to travel about 1 meter in a lifetime. Say for example, we spot a planet in a far off galaxy, it has all required conditions for intelligent life to bloom on, and is emitting radio signals. We decide to launch a ship from Earth to visit this planet. When you get there, the planet has aged upwards of hundreds of millions years. Remember, looking at something from a large distance is looking back in time.

Do you know how many disasters can befall a planet in hundreds of millions of years? Imagine looking at Earth from this far away galaxy, what would you see? The planet would be a raging ball of molten rock, appearing incapable of ever sustaining life.

First contact will probably be finding very basic lifeforms like bacterias.

It wont, the universe is far too vast for us to ever expect contact.
a thousand times this. scientifly it's very unrealistic to expect that there will ever be contact between two species, if any others exist.

It won't be very soon, or even ever. The universe is a massive place, and very, very old.

It would goes like this-

Honestly I would like to think that first contact will be a more peaceful one like in that film Star Trek: First Contact (well hopefully the alien should know which people they should meet first and not some random guy).

With just the assumption that Aliens cannot travel faster than the speed of light (Not a perticuallry huge logic jump) the odds of alien life appearing anywhere near earth during the entire life time of human exsistance is FREAKING TINY. Seriously the maths for it puts the likelyhood at less than your odds of winning the lottery.

Whether or not aliens exsist is moderately likely if its done purely by mathematical chance. But because of the ridiculous size of the universe the odds of any two forms of life meeting are hillarously small. So first contact will happen when we make some life in a test tube on mars and claim its an alien.
