The longer I'd do Stealth Operative missions, the higher the chances would be for me to die from someone I couldn't see.
Because, that's what I'd probably only be good for in a war. I have a serious knack for stealth, as cheesy and unreal as it sounds.

I'd be THAT guy that gets shot first.

I'd be standing on the street corner only to have my head explode from a sniper, and then either the bastard is killed or gets away. Knowing my luck, I'd be the first one in my platoon to die.

Depends to what standard I was trained to, I'm of above average fitness and a quick and devoted learner so I guess if I was taught to be good in a combat situation I would learn to be. Can't know until it happens though.

Most Snipers in the US fulfil the role of Dedicated Marksman/whatever you guys call it, don't they?
They certainly can do so, yes. A Sniper is essentially a Designated Marksman with a bigger, more accurate weapon (at the expense of rounds per minute) and special training in being stealthy.
To put it roughly.

However, if a person with the training to be in a Scout/Sniper team takes on the role of a Designated Marksman, he would not be a Sniper in that situation.

I can't say whether or not it's common for a Sniper to take the role of DM, as it would be a rather large waste of his abilities.

Also, I'm not an American :)
Neither am I. I was under the impression that's what most 'snipers' in the US army did though.

I wouldn't do well i imagine
in games i'm your average bulletsponge
running into the thick of it all guns blazing like a tank while my allies pick them off from behind me

in real warfare, that strategy would go well for about a second before i got my face blown into the side of a building

I wanted to join RAF a while ago and be either a pilot or a Sniper, however apparently wearing glasses negates me from entering either *sigh* my third choice was Paratrooper (parachute-capable unit) or Units in support of the special forces so I'll take the Paratrooper one here.

(Still glasses probably mean I can't do either :/)

On that basis I'd probably be shot while using the parachute or get scattered from the landing zone and be captured knowing my poor luck either way I couldn't see myself doing particularly well in either role.

well, im experience in guns, being from the south and all, i geuss after i got "used" to being shot at i'd be able to fire back and get used to it after a while. assumeing i wouldn't get shot.
i'd basically find good cover and start taking careful aim. like a sniper.

Just before the fighting started, I would fall out of the helicopter and be seriously injured, inconveniencing the rest of my squad in trying to get me back to camp.

Go team!

I have absolutely no idea.
I take martial arts, I never get stressed, even when having my face beaten in, "this is coming from experience"
but I do not comprehend the depth of will, fear, or hatred, to go out with the intention of taking another human life.

Giving my own is okay. Beating someone until they can't stand, can be very okay. Taking a life is just not for me, that's probably the one thing I'd ever get seriously stressed about. There is no reset button and sleep/rest won't fix it. :-/

i did ok in the service while i was in, if i went back im sure i would probably make it out alive unless something really catastrophic happens. I would probably reenlist as artillery though.

I'd make a great leader (one of those that never engages in direct combat), but if I had to fight myself I'd probably desert.

I would grab an M72 LAW, aim at the ground and rocket jump into the air, deploy my parachute and silently drift behind enemy lines. I would then pull a Barrett M82A1 (equipped with a silencer of course) out of my ass and silently pick off all sentries and possible search lights in the area. Once I know that I cannot be detected, (the enemy would obviously not notice the destroyed lights) I would try to take out high value targets with my akimbo Beretta 92FS's (equipped with silencers and 5x power ACOG sights). Once the high value targets are out of the picture the rest of the enemy force would lose morale and collapse, I would win the war for my country and save the world. Who said video games weren't realistic? :p

I'm a decent shot, so I hope I'd get at least one kill. That or I'd stay behind as the guy with the machine gun to cover my squad's back.

M249 SAW...better stop now or I'll drool all over my laptop.

I am training as we speak (well I have a few days of now) to become the leader of a mortar team which consists of the leader and 6 men who work with a "Mortar cannon" in the Finnish army. I have 2 more weeks before I get my chief post and then the next 6 months will be practicing with my team or if I am lucky I will be the one training the new leaders of the next platoon.

How I would do in a actual war I have no freakin' idea, most likely adrenalin pumping through my veins and running around like crazy blasting everything to oblivion xD

This is the best answer I've read so far. You just forgot the "drinking real coffee" part.

OT: I'd do alright. I am from Texas and all; you know, that place that teaches you guerrilla combat training in primary school.

Seriously though, I'd be fine. Hell, I got shooting every weekend and participate in different shooting competitions.

Anyway, I'll be a lot better prepared when I join the army here in a couple of months. Just need to finish this university thing.

Though I don't think giving away your position every couple of minutes is an ideal strategy for staying alive! (;

EDIT* If I had to choose something I'd be Special Forces, just so I could canoe up the Niagra Falls, blow up a power plant, escape in a barrel and live to tell the tale.
A...Canadian Bacon reference?

Well, I mean, they do have thing called bootcamp, so I'd probably do just about as well as the fellow next to me. I can't really say for sure though, since I haven't done anything that stressful before.

Ideally, the same for me, but the military doesn't let you fly with glasses.

I would probably get assigned to a ship, since my previous military service was aboard a ship, and I am a trained JOOD.
