It's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there what with the way that atheism is still culturally frowned upon, the complete lack of free health care, the active gun culture in most places, the rampant materialism, the complete lack of environmental responsibility, bad education and the strange tendency to butt into other people's business (speaking from about 10 cases of personal experience from various visits).
Atheism may be frowned on in some places, but only if it's the militant variety. If you don't go out of your way to piss off religious people, no one should bother you. In more countries than not, being of a particular religion (including atheism) can get you killed.

As for free health care, it isn't free anywhere. It always has to be paid for by someone, and that generally comes in the form of taxes. In the US, our current system is a confusing hybrid of two conflicting systems, which often results in chaos. Obviously, that isn't ideal. However, if you look at the theories of a free market economic system (which is NOT currently in place) health care should fit perfectly well into it, making it just as successful as any other part of the economy. Free care simply is not the American way, but neither is allowing people to suffer and die needlessly, so that responsibility would (and to our way of thinking, should) fall under the auspices of individual communities, not a huge federal entity.

Regarding guns, that's an even longer lecture than the last one and I'm not going there. It's an integral part of our culture and makes plenty of sense when you understand all the facts behind it.

You're not wrong about the other stuff, although environmental responsibility is a much trickier subject that has no solid consensus to back up anyone's position.

Those cons are a bit unnecessary. every country has its group of racists and bad history, and idiots in the government.

OT, well, its my home. Its not perfect (no where is) but its home, and tahts all I can say. We've had the most stable and peaceful change of government in the history of any nation, and thats something. we have a living constitution which, for better or worse, I wouldnt change for anything. Sure, some of our population is bad, but most are decent people. I dont know, I enjoy it, and I think even if I was from another country, it would speak to me as a good country to live in other then my own.

I'd give it a solid 8. It's my home, and I love my country. The government? not so much.

I can't even vote that's how disgusted I am with this country. I always laugh at those that say in *hick voice* "If you dun'luv 'merica GTFO!"

Well genius... If I had the money to afford such a luxury, I would!

'mericuh is like Star Wars. I hate most of it, the people involved with it, its current set of ideals and most visible themes... yet the idea of the United States (and Star Wars), the spirit in which it was created... that I love.

So, on the one hand it's a two, on the other it's an eight.

A really weak 5
things that doesn't make me love it more
-Rant on how bad a non-market economy is and then pay out billions to banks and car industry wouldn't it be right to just let them fail? thats market economy, but noo lets save them..
-War on nouns (terrorism/drugs etc..) really why not declare war on yellow because thats an evil color...
-Billions in debt and still being the "greatest" economy not REally trying to do anything about it....
-The media industry good at making content but not so good to the people thats buying it...
-(disagreeable) the weird patent thinking..
-very loud weird people (makes it seem like all of Americans are weird)
-very touchy about religions
-stuff to often gets out in the states before rest of the world NOT funny....:p
-"land of the free" well I got to disagree on that some times
- death penalty...

good things
well lots of stuff gets "thought" of there (phones, software, cant think of more at the moment)
most an speak a rather simple language (English) (not my first language)
fun to mock, and simple... (mock my own country a lot to loads of stupid politicians etc here to..)
(disagreeable) got loads of nukes
mostly got h'lluva balls telling other countries what to do more or less..

to name a few,.. most subjects tend to get old and forgotten...

Ps. don't hate the country/people just thinks it's a bit to weird for my taste...
pps. this is based to what I can compare to, my lovely (far from) perfect country

I give you a 3. A generous 3. Calling America a "Beacon of Hope" is just a bag of fail . America is a good example of western civilisation gone wrong. You have everything, yet squander it. America is a glutton and a genocidal scumbag with more then it deserves. Many "Poorer" countries have already been proven to be better places to live in than America. (http://nationranking.wordpress.com/2011/03/06/2011-qli/)

Pretty much all of the people I know laugh at America as a whole and couldn't imagine living there at all. And if they would it'd be for the access to certain entertainment ( gaming for example).

America has had the reputation for being a beacon of hope for almost the entire world for more than 100 years. We also have the reputation of being rednecks, idiots, war-mongering fools, and being stubborn.

So then, on a scale of 1-10, how does good ol' 'Mericuh do for ya?
-----------------
After a bit of thought, and influence from your comments. I think I'll score us at the respectable score of 6.5.

Pros:

Great technology, a melting pot of cultures, large cities, large territories, huge economy, and a hefty military to kick any oppposition square in the keister.

Cons:

Massive debt, a surplus of idiots in the Government, a currently clogged up system of Party Politics, the WBC, the KKK, McCarthyism, and money hungry corporations.
A melting pot of cultures, large cities. Hihihihi yeah right. It may look like that to you. It's all relative of course. So I ought not to tease you about your idea of 'Large' and 'cities' and a 'melting pot of cultures'.
Anyway my opinion about America is very positive. I've had 5 amazing weeks there, met the most fantastic people and it thought me a lot about the world and myself. I give America a 8 out of 10 for being there, as a country to settle down/ raise a family I would give it a 6.5 out of 10. Because America and Americans are all badshit crazy (I love them I really do, but they are all badshit crazy.), and it's going to be a bit more of a chalange to raise a well ballanced son/daughter.
I would give America a higher grading on the scale of being there, if it actual acted like an example to the rest of the world. But their whole religous dictatorish look on things ruin that. When America grows up it'll get a higher grading, but I'll still only grade it 6.5 out of 10 for a place to raise a family.

Do they even lose any sleep at night knowing they are ruining the country? Less pay from job moves means less taxes paid, which means less public services like the police and fire departments as well as social services. Notice how our states are running low on revenues? That's a direct result of sending jobs to other countries. It's only going to get worse.
You are aware that states on running low on revenues thanks to terrible spending decisions, right? We fire teachers and cut down on school budgets so the education higher-ups can get bigger paychecks and the football fields can get new astroturfs. This isn't a problem of sending jobs overseas. This is a problem of the government spending money on far too many charities, themselves, and useless luxuries. The only way to reel in this rampant spending is to convince people to vote for the guy who won't hand out money to every organization possible, who will instead keep the money tight. But that isn't going to happen, because that would mean no Social Security, no Climbing walls for the schools, no bonuses for employees who do nothing but promise more money all day. The economy is in trouble because of the government's bad decisions, not because corporations are outsourcing. And the economy isn't really in that much trouble. It would run fine on it's own if the government didn't pull their stunts all the time.

I rate America itself as a 7.5-8, but the government needs some hefty work if it is going to match that score.

Oh and by the way I add I hate the fact some (maybe most) Americans think it's thanks to them we won the WWII (the allied countries, technically my country was neutral). It's unfair to distinguish one country, but if i had to choose one, would be Russia, they were the country most affected by the war and the country that turned the tables against Germany and gave them most trouble. (Yeah I know UK and US helped)
Honestly I would say it's thanks to Poland the allied forces won the war. I agree with you that it's unfair to distinguish between countries that fought, but still Poland played a key role in the whole war. (But I'm a big fanboy of Poland during WWII). History is written by the those who win, and Poland lost WWII. Therefor it's role is downplayed by allied forces. But if it had not by Polands constant resistance (and not the lame french kind) Germany would have made it to moscow long before winter. I'm not going to teach you a history lesson you're not interested in, but look it up if you do want to know.

Nice place, been many times. Love it. It's close to Canada too.

Expensive healthcare though. That's not good.
So a solid 8/10. One good thing of the expensive healthcare is that it encourages people not to do stupid shit and hurt themselves.

I agree Poland was really important and it's a shame it's not much mentioned, specially considering that for a "loser" did hundreds times better than the French, France did really poor in the WWII. But I can't agree that it's thanks to Poland the allied won the war, I think Germany even without Poland would lose against URSS sooner or later due to it's enormous space, population and cold wheather.

Also as you must know maybe better than me, URSS invaded Poland together with Germany, but it's point was to later defend against Germany with borders more at the west, making it harder for Germans to reach the rest of Russia. (Yes altrough Stalin signen NAP with Germany, he knew war was iminent.
Yeah, but if Hitler didn't invade the USSR, we'd all be speaking German right now.

Country - 8/10
Nevada - 11/10

America is what cool people fly over on their way to Nevada!

I'm kidding, no need to flame (Nevada is awesome though).
