Depends really, in most cases it's just a troll who has earned there ban.

In the case of Max the Reaper and No More Sanity, it's continuous bad behavior. Both posters were warned multiple times and they never learned their lesson.

If you behave yourself and follow the rules and guidelines, then you won't have to worry about a permaban.
Were they really warned multiple times, or were they just suspended, and put on probation for two incidents throughout the long time they spent on the escapist. Then you have to ask was it for a misreading on the account of a mod.

And then they get banned for their 'history', of bad behaviour.

Maybe I'm wrong; I dunno. That's why I ask. I find that reading plain text can be both ambiguous and misleading to it's meaning.

I havn't got a foggy. But I really don't want to find out. I'd rather try stay the bright side of the escapist.

Plus, there's better ways to get a reputation.

Let's face the facts. Max was a complete and utter asshole, but one cannot deny he was a big part of the community.

His problem was that he kept pushing boundaries and one several occasions overstepped the foggy grey zone between what is and isn't acceptable forum behavior, almost as if he thought he could get by on his popularity. I guess he didn't count on the Mods snapping back.
He was frankly terribly tiresome to read.
Quite glad he's gone, forums seem alot better for it. None of that "Oh I'm evil" shit he used to spread like butter on bread.

Well it's ridiculously easy to get put on probation and suspended. So I'm guessing the answer is "Fairly easy".

I called a kid saying his life was over because of RRoD a "Pathetic little cretin" and got suspended. And I had a valid post with that statement in (nutshell) "There's worse things than RRoD."

Suspended. Lovely.
Hey I remember when our little back and forth god us both suspended... I can't remember what was said but oh well.
Ah! Me too! And I don't think anything that bad was said. I usually tend to like people I argue with; You were one of these people. Pimpeter was not. I dislike him. (That's about as much as I can say there without being suspended again.

But like any good Englishman, Puzzles, I know cordially and warmly invite you to a pot of tea and a biscuit to put our past differences behind us. Whilst watching Blackadder.

oh god it's easy, just be really really racist while trolling.

but asfor by accident, nah, you always get suspended first. I got a suspension once and then later got probation. I know there's just one thread I have to create and I'll be banned, but I'm saving it for a special occasion.

I'm not sure I would say they were here "long"; they had a lot of posts, but the length of their time here wasn't remarkable.

It's not about those two, but about 'notable' users before them who were banned; it's a thread with a lot of replies from the mods/staff about these sorts of issues:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.120751#2376368

it's about the most informative thing I've come across as far as the real story about how bans and moderation work.
Wow, that is quite informative.

I've yet to receive any mod slap, I hope I don't, but sometimes I get angry, usually at people who flame me (or even others).

It also makes me wonder are certain users "tagged" by mods/admins for observation. It seems that users are "tagged" for review once action has been taken.

I know I should be alright with this kinda stuff, but the problem is with personalities. While some people *are* trolls, others may just due to the time spent here. People get used to someone and get progressively annoyed by them, the longer they hang around.

On a side note though, it makes me bitter about the lack of dedicated servers in MW2 all over again. Mods and Admins really can make a place soooo much better. You'd miss them if they disappeared. If I want to be trolled I can load up EvE and fly to the Capital system of Goonspace, and chat there.

If you saw the posts that both members were banned for then you would agree with the call by the mods. The two were suspended multiple times and that didn't help. If you don't change you get banned. It's sad to see such big members of our community banned, but with such a following on the forums then they need to set an example on the forums.
