I've thought about getting into it at school but i\I'm unsure as what to expect. Is there some certain mindset I should have here? Has anyone who's played give me some advice as what to expect, pointers, etc. ?

If you'd like an RPG that genuinely involves roleplaying & infinite possibilities then D&D is definitely for you.

Pointers? Listen to the DM & the seemingly more knowledgeable/benevolent players in the group. Use common sense & keep an open mind. Try to create a character that isn't annoying.

I believe it's some of the most fun I've ever had. If you get with some friends and don't take it too seriously, it will be amazing. I try to play it like these guys, http://www.majorspoilers.com/category/major-spoilers-podcast/critical-hit
who actually, by listening to their podcast, got me into playing D&D.

Find a DM that is totally sadistic, yet really inventive, clever, funny, and rewarding. I took a few pointers from my old DM, and playing with me can be hecktic but rewarding. and trust me, experiment. You can literally create ANYTHING in this game. I have a sword called "The lost spirit of light" and it is AWESOME. Likewise, a friend has an infinite stock of potions that makes whatever it comes into contact with horny. He calls it sex panther, and 60% of the time it works all the time. :D have fun, dude.

What Chibz said...

One more thing to add: if you want to get into tabletop roleplaying of any sort, D&D included, you cannot hate basic mathematics. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division need to be second nature to you (I say this because I've had a few people without a basic education join my campaigns... it's never pretty). Considering you're talking about joining a group at school, though, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

The game isn't "fun" per se.

As the Sheriff of Rottingham put it... IT'S ALL HOW YOU USE IT!

The real key to having fun with D&D isn't the actual gameplay as much as it is interaction with the other players. Much like MMOs, D&D's biggest strength is the players, not the actual game.

It's probably the most fun you will ever have, if you get a group of people playing to have fun. It's not particularily fun to have a guy who rule-mongers or someone who forces someone to roleplay when they don't want to.
I've been playing for a few years now and the best fun always comes from when we end up going off track. 3 hours spent looking for a man named 'Jim', or when we angered a priest who turned against our cleric and many more instances of my halfling getting thrown in a small container and 'sold' to the quests bad-guy.
The sad thing is; you get proud of the worst moments in your game. 'Oh, I'm getting sold into slavery... can I do anything? No... Aw damn.'

hmm... I tried starting a group in middle school, we just used a "start edition" to the game(because me and my buddy that started it had little cash, and we wanted to make sure it would be fun before investing all our cash in it), and needless to say, some of the people were.... tiring, like in the "dude, whats your problem?" kinda way, I also think we disregarded about 70% of the rules and never did a real campaign(the club only lasted about one hour after school, not a lot of time to get a whole dungeon done) and I also wasn't the best DM you could pick from, but hey, it might be fun if you get in with the right group of people.

As was mentioned above, it's entirely dependent on who you play with. You can have a terrible group of people and will kill D&D for you, but you get the right group of people and it doesn't even really matter what's going on in the campaign, you'll have a great time. The problem with D&D is that character creation can get really really dull. Get past that and you'll be sittin' pretty. I started playing without really knowing the rules when I was about 7, learned the rules at 12, been DMing a campaign for over 2 1/2 years now, DMing another campaign on top of that. Highlight of my weekends. Go for it, if you can find a good group!

I really wouldn't know.

So why did I just spend my afternoon creating a map for Half-Life PnP RPG?

It depends entirely on who you play with, it can be like hanging with your pals or listening to the teacher lecture you for an hour.

It's subjective. If you'd like to know more, there's a group on the Escapist that deals with pen and paper games. D&D is, of course, the most talked about game.

With a good DM, and group it is potentially the most fun you will ever have in your life; besides sex obviously.
