Not trying to be a smart ass, but what do you mean by, doesn't do what I want?
I mean, sure there are some limits, but in the end, it's the DM that lets or doesn't let you do stuff.
I'm honestly curious here, can you name a example?
It's not so much a DM issue as it is a mechanics issue. In 4th ed, the mechanics that aren't directly involved in killing things just aren't as interesting as I'd like them to be. It's very much geared towards the whole high flying combat-heavy adventure. My second issue is more pronounced in 3.5, but doing a low/no magic setting in D&D is nearly impossible. Not to mention doing tense moments is rather difficult when dying ranges from being serious but reversible to being a minor annoyance, whether it's a PC or core NPC that's being threatened. Sure, the GM can just disallow certain things, but it's difficult to do it easily and without crafty players finding ways around it.
