Hey look, it's this thread again!
I'm sorry that this topic has been done before, but I think its safe to say that its pretty unreasonable to excpect that 1)I have the time to read through every thread to make my topic hasnt been done, and 2) that every thread is going to be completley original topic.

Graphics are very important to me. Essentially they are the whole game. Graphics are not just the looks, but they define the function of game-play.
Thats an interesting idea please explain.

To me, graphics are the cherry on top of the cake. I'd like the cherry to be fresh and tasty, but if the cake is still good I'll eat it anyway. However, if the cherry is a spherical collection of faeces, then I'm just going to throw up at a certain point.

That metaphor almost falls apart considering cherries can be removed. I suppose that would be HD modding or something.

I defiantly appreciate good graphics/art direction , it is a factor in whether I buy a game or not and it does add to my enjoyment of a game. It?s not the most important thing of course and I will still play a game that looks like ass if it?s fun but they would have to work harder to get me intrested.

No, but there is a search function. Ignorantia juris non excusat. Or in this case, forum etiquette.

Quite important. I hate jaggies so at least x4 AA for me. The difference between
and

is one of the reason I play on PC.

Extreme example, I know, but with a trained eye you notice it just as much on jaggy 3d models

Art direction is less important to me it has to technically look good.

I guess just like audiophiles shun cheap headphones I shun console quality graphics.

a bit I usually ramp it up to very high, set everything to maximum and look for a HD mod (like NMC,s texture pack for FO3/NV)
although I don't mind 2D graphics (like Metal Slug or Pokemon)

Graphical fidelity-wise, I don't really care, as long as it's well optimised, and more importantly clear cut what is what. The worst thing is a game that's trying to look really good but really isn't. I'm more interested in the art style really, and how well the fidelity can complement it. You can make the game look really high quality AAA grahpics and still make it look really ugly if you use bad colours, bad texture design and poor art.

With graphics I don't feel like things need to look realistic to be good, just aesthetically pleasing which can mean a lot of different things. Cartoony type graphics can be aesthetically pleasing if done right. I could honestly see even a game like skyrim having cartoony graphics and being fun.

As long as I can tell that a boot is a boot, I don't care how good looking a game is. If they're bad to the point that it goes against the experience, that's when I get upset.

I love good looking games, but I wouldn't buy/play a game just because it looks pretty. Gameplay is definetly more valued(I care little for story) than graphics.

Unless a game is mind-bendingly ugly, the base graphics of a game rarely bother me. HOWEVER, I have several fairly OCD criteria which cause me to stay away from consoles. A) If the framerate is noticeably choppy, or below 30fps, it frustrates me immensely. B) If a game is not as visually pleasing as it could be, i.e. graphics settings medium to low, it really bugs me on a level that is both irrational and petty. I must have settings on the highest to feel that I am experiencing the most the game has to offer.. I can handle it if I can't quite manage V-Sync or 8x antialiasing, but other than that, no. This goes for new releases as well as things 5-10 years old. And NOTHING bothers me more than a PC game with limited options for graphics customization.

Graphics are extremely important.

I know that thinking this way is seen as shallow, but lets not kid ourselves; We want our media to look the part, whether it be movies or games.

absolutely not important. For me most important things in games is in this order: Story--->Characters--->World Design\Art Work--->Gameplay

I mainly play consoles and my favourite genre is J-RPG

Graphical fidelity =/= aesthetic

The aesthetic is just as important to a game as the gameplay. Visual and audio cues are vitally important to ensure that the player understands the mechanics and when to apply them. Without them the game becomes little more than an incomprehensible mess of button mashing and trial and error.
This doesn't mean that the game should have giant glowing signposts telling the player how to proceed. If that's what you get from this then step away from the keyboard and think for a moment.
Here's an example. The player is given a bag of bombs and told to place one by a cracked wall, this causes the wall to break and reveal a way forward. At a later point in the game the player notices a wall with a crack in it. Given previous visual cues, the player can assume that using a bomb on this wall will unlock a new area.
Since you people are so fond of cake analogies.
Assume the gameplay to be the batter for an ordinary Victoria sponge, then assume aesthetics are the ingredients that need to be added to cake mix to create a lemon cake and the graphical fidelity to the icing.
With just the gameplay, it fails to be what it sets out to be, it's bland and uninteresting.
With just the aesthetic then you just have a collection random ingredients and nothing more.
Just because you can eat the plain cake on it's own, doesn't mean it's a good cake.

You need both to succeed, and arbitrarily placing one above the other only impairs the overall product.

Aesthetics are more important than graphics. Look at Minecraft. It's retro look together with the landscape of the game looks pretty decent. So my take is: Great aesthetics plus semi good graphics and good gameplay equals great game.
