How long until games get blamed on this?

Just a second ago I got off the Escapist to check my Yahoo account. When I got there I found this:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/hostage_shooting

How long do you think it will take before some vague link between this and video games is found? And have you heard anything else about this story?

Hell, I already believe it was the fault of video games.

Though this does smell oddly of the aforementioned Counter Strike, perhaps our community will get a lucky break and video games will be overlooked.

Shooter was described as being a young male. I would say he probably came into contact with a 'violent game' at some point and any other motivation he might have had for this, like possible grievances with immigration laws or something, would be ignored in favor of blaming the gaming.

Of course, if the man never touched a game before then the incident will be seen for what it is. But, again, if he's found to own a shooting game then the game will be blamed.

"The gunman barricaded the rear door of the American Civic Association with his car before entering through the front door, firing his weapon, the official said".
I hate to say it, but that's a classic tactic I've used in GTA IV, to stop people escaping and to stop the police coming in through more than one entrance.

Also, just look at the key words in this story; 'New York', 'immigrants' and 'killings'.

It has GTA IV written all over it. I wouldn't be surprised if we read something like this in a follow up story.

"The still unnamed gunman confessed to police that he just snapped as he was driving to pick up his girlfreind, after his cousin phoned him up again, for the 14th time that week, to ask if he wanted to go bowling"

Given the current state of paranoia, I'd say in about...

This just in:
"The gunman is now in a catatonic state, repeating to himself that he no longer cares about seeing some 'American tee-tees'."

Perhaps not long. Although it's not the usual education institution setting we have become used to, the shooter is a young male, so they are likely already making the connection.

There is no link to video games (At least not one i saw). We already know some reporters blow things out of preportion but when 12 people die then there is no need to make it bigger.

Jack Thompson will be the only blaming video games.

No, we can't get that lucky.

If they were blaming gaming it would have been there to begin with, sort of like another article that was discussed on The Escapist not too long ago where a guy allegedly killed his wife over Grand Theft Auto (even if the text of the article shows a differant cause). Simply put if the writer was after that kind of attention they would have worked it in immediatly.

That said, I agree that it was probably some statement about our rather lax immigration policies and how we've been failing to adapt the immigrants we already take to our society.

In general I'd suspect we won't hear much about it simply because to put the incident up for more analysis might lead to conclusions that our more liberal leaders (who are currently in power) won't paticularly like. Not a paticular criticism on them here, simply that this is how things seem to work in general.

I'd also point out that what this guy did with his car is a pretty standard tactic, it's not something that was invented specifically for GTA. *IF* I ever intended to go into a building to shoot people, which will probably never happen, I'd probably do something very similar, and video games would have nothing to do with it.

yeah, it;s going to happen. there will probably be some little known game where that sort of thing happens and, therefore, all games will be blamed.
