How long would you keep buying games on consoles with a power somwhere between the PS2 and the Wii?

it's disappointing to see the number of people (in NZ at least) bitching about the drop of the PS2 Backwards Compatability, not many people realise that it's now cheaper to buy a PS3 and PS2 seperately than getting the original 60gb.
I went out and got a 60G PS3 as soon as I heard about the compatibility issues. My TV sits too far from my PS2 to comfortably play with a wired controller (I don?t like 3rd party controllers) So I like being able to play PS2 games with a wireless. I can?t wait for the DuelShock 3. Also, if I can get one more console out of my already cluttered rack then all the better. Depending on how big my apartment is from move to move I have anywhere from 3 to 10 consoles connected to it, so backwards compatibility can be a big deal.

As for which version of a game I get. I agree completely. I generally buy games for the 360 because most of my friends have one. The only cross platform game I purchased for the PS3 was Virtua Fighter 5. It was out first, and generally when I play fighting games we are all in the same place anyway.

Under what conditions are you willing to continue to invest in more or less outdated gaming systems?
If you like it why stop? I don't see why since the system is designed to entertain, if you still find it entertaining keep it up.

I'm still ticked I can't play Intellivision anymore. My buddy has the arcade version of Robotron, still my favorite game, and until the joysticks broke I would periodically go there to play it, 20 years after it was first introduced to the market.

It all depends on the games, for me. Hardware capabilities don't have any indication on the success of a console, just look at history:
PSone devastates the nintendo 64, the PSone being a lower quality 32-bit system and the 64 obviously being 64 bit.
The PS2 dominates both the xbox and gamecube, both having significantly greater power than the PS2.
The troble with these examples is that these systems were respectively all part of the same (next) generation and weren't that different from each other.
It didn't make much of a difference.

The Wii has an enormous lead after a short period of time over the PS3 and xbox 360, each system having better online support and hardware capabilities several times greater than nintendo's machine.
As we saw, price played a lot in that. It only sufficed that the PS3's price dropped a bit for this console to become a challenger to the Wii. Same happened with the 360, for a short period, in Japan.

I wouldn't pass definitive judgements and use such consoles as examples until we precisely see the whole spectrum, which means see what they become.

As a whole, the people here are not exactly a good representation of the mass market.

The Wii does not have a lead over anything. The 360 still currently has the largest install base of the current generation systems. The Wii is outselling it month to month, but it hasn't yet sold more overall. Of course this will change by end of year I suspect. Maybe as soon as this Friday.

This already happened...in September.

Ah. So it has. I didn't realize they had passed them already. Thanks :)
Dude...selling 10milloin consoles int eh time period they did pretty much kills the 360s lead even if they are 4 million units from the 360s number, also the 360 has a near 30% fail rate so at least 30% of its numbers are "bad".

Devs are wary as every tho the WII is cute but not enough to jump to in numbers the PS3 might be good for later if/when it starts gettign better, and the 360 while damaged looks to be gettign Hdvd enable units in a year or 2 if this is for all new units MS could be HDVD gaming by 010/011 and that even with the 360s hardware issues will give them a 4 year boost.

Sure the WII is dead in 3 or 4 years but they wil have made more profits in that time than the other 2, for the long run its down to the 360 and PS3 mainly because the indutry likes its graphical fluff and the WII can cut it.

If the PS3 can not lower prices and not features it will lsoe and devs will finally abandon it in time leaving the PS3 like the Xbox with only a hand full of titles and alot of debt.
