the thing is, overpopulation may be the lesser evil compared to population shrinkage, imagine if in a single generation hardly any babies are born, call it a "baby bust" that can have DEVASTATING effects on world economies ans this generation ages, what happens as the previous much larger generation gets old and no longer contribute to the economy yet still need the economy to cater for them? What happens when people are promoted through their jobs only there just aren't enough young people to take over the lower positions.
I'm sure everyone will be thinking that when we're all starving "well, I can't afford food, but at least the rest of the economy is fine"

Or living in waterworld, or in a desert. I dunno, something is going to fuck up because of too many people.

Even is it is just me getting pissed off at bigger queues.

None. I'm not having children. I've made a promise to myself, and even if it comes between not having children and losing the person I love, I'm still not having children.

A few reasons, number 1, I'd be a terrible father. I'm a very selfish person, and I couldn't handle children. They'd end up growing up quite mentally fucked.
Number 2, I don't like children. They annoy the shit out of me. I can't be in a room with anyone under 12, or I have to leave.
Number 3, the world is fucked. Seriously, we're all going to die, and quite quickly too. Probably not in our lifetime, but certainly soon. I wouldn't want my children or my childrens children to go through that kind of pain.
Number 4, which kind of contradicts number 3, is that the only way we can save this planet is if a lot of us don't have children. Having children is one of the worst things you can do to the environment, overpopulation is killing the planet.

So there, that's my reasons.

I think it is immoral to have more than 2 kids, given how bad everything is. I wouldn't restrict it, and you're welcome to it if you really want to, but make sure you consider the ramifications of it before you have them.
Wow. Pretty much this. Sounds like we have a lot in common.

I'm just a selfish person. I'm good with children, it's just that I want my life to be about me. I only get the one, I can't be wasting a third of it looking after underdeveloped offspring.

I want three. Seems like the perfect number, if I have kids. I want to actually give birth to at least one, preferably all three, but I might also adopt, so who knows.

It's immoral to have more than 1 kid, infact 1 is too many, there're 6.2 billion people on the planet, and we aren't doing very well at the moment are we? our birth rate is so much higher than our death rate that we'll be on 7 billion pretty soon.

i think it was Bob Stanhope (is that his name, he has a section on screenwipe) who pointed out that over population is bringing about the end of the world, and he's right! so we're in desperate need of WW3 or another planet.

OT: but that won't stop me having kids, 'cos i just don't care anymore.

Foreign adoption is RETARDED.
Why? Relative poverty within a Western country (the type of countries most likely to have adoptive parents) is a lot less extreme than between Western states and developing countries. At the same time, developing countries have too high a birth rate and suffer from infrastructural problems related to overpopulation, while Western countries are always whining about declining birth rates and population aging. Foreign adoption is anything *but* retarded. It's completely logical.

Except those people who grow up in shitty foster homes in a western, 1st world country have a nice tendency to have poor work ethic, bad grades, a lame excuse of a personality, and more likelihood to engage in criminal actions that directly affect citizens of their country.

I'd much rather stop a kid in the US from joining a gang or shooting up a convenience store than help a kid from doing the same thing in Zimbabwe or whatever.

One at a time... Im not gonna jump out and say I want X amount of kids.
I don't want ANY, right now anyway. But i can see it happening in the end... as for how many? Well I would only plan for a child if i knew i could support the wee kid.

when you say: "side effects"

you mean parents killing their female infants?

I want two, either one boy and one girl, or two girls. If I'm unlucky enough to get two boys, then I would consider adopting a third child, just so I would know I would getting a girl. I seen several posts saying this: "Unlike many people on this site, I actually like kids", and I'd agree with that, I know I enjoy spending time with children because I have a 6 year old sister who I love looking after whenever I can...

And just to note, I don't think it's immoral to have more than two kids, as birth rates are too low in Europe (where I live) anyway, but I wouldn't want more than a couple of my own anyway...

As for names, my favourite for a girl would be Maya, with Amy and Chloe as reserve choices if my other-half wouldn't agree to the afore mentioned one, I don't know what I would call a boy...

2 at most, but I don't really want kids. They'd have about 10 years apart too.
I like the names Kaira and Vincent, but that will probably change.

I'd want 2 kids, simply because I don't think I could manage 3, and I wouldn't want 1 to grow up alone.

I have no idea what I'd name a boy, but it it were a girl, I'd go for Kaede because Killer 7 is awesome.

Probably one. And no, I don't think it's immoral to have more than two. I do, however, think it's stupid.

Aw man, all these bloody doomists. You do not know the future, and the alarmist idea that massive overpopulation will occur soon pretty much relies on the current trends remaining, which is unlikely. It's known at least that greater family incomes often results in fewer children per family (less needed for support, as the financial cushion is adequate) so, spread the wealth and enrich the world if you want fewer kids (I'm not a communist incidentally, rather the opposite in fact). Who's to say a population decrease isn't likely?

Incidentally, I am reluctant to have kids right now. I'm happy to pursue a, hopefully, productive career and therefore able to support myself when the time comes (provided interfering governments don't steal all my money first). However, if pushed, I might contribute to the gene pool in my own little way, but not more than twice, barring any tragedies of course.

Dunno about names.

Nothing wrong with more than 2 if you can afford it and raise them right. However, with current overpopulation issues, I'd suggest either having only 1 kid or adopting them.
Edit: Don't want kids. Don't think I'd be a good father and there's not much incentive to become one.

I want a big family! I have a maternal instinct like you wouldn't believe. I just want to take every single person younger than me under my wing and smother them in love. I really want to teach my kids how to be respectful, to be smart, to be thankful, to have adventures in trees and grass and recycle when they can.

I don't like bratty, spoiled kids who scream and complain because their parents don't discipline them.

I want to name my first girl something like Vera Jane, and teach her to be a strong lady. For boys, I want something like Johnny, Jack or Greg. =)

Also, when I saw this, I was like... MUST! HUG! NOW!
"I will... break you!"

Basically yes. And I doubt that will happen in wealthier countries because they don't favour boys so much. It would be likely to still happen in LEDCs, though.

I don't really want any, but after I get older that may very well change (damn existentialism).

Name for a boy: Gordon Oliver, because his initials would be GOD, and I can't help but ruin a kid's life like that.

Name for a girl: Amy, maybe, screw it. I have no clue.

Yeah, having more than two kids is immoral. Really, we have way too many people. We need to start hiring aliens to poach people, like what we do with hunters and deer!
