I said 26 and I was marked wrong as the teacher said "Capitals and small letters, there are actually 52 letters in the alphabet." I argued that were fundamentally the same and he said they are totally different symbols used in different situations than each other.

Do it. Or, you could try to be a smart-ass with him and ask if he also counts the "52" cursive characters in the English alphabet, which would give a grand total of 104 letters. Use his own moon-logic against him.

well, spanish speaking, using that logic, there a lot more letters than they appear in the alphabet because of the 'acento' (a/á,o/ó) wich also changes the meaning of the word (but yeah, your teacher is wrong/WRONG). There's also the 'ñ' wich comes after the n, wich seems logical.

Nerdy speaking, in ASCII code uppercase and lowercase letters have different code than their respective equal.

Just tell your teacher that in elematary school they don't theach the alphabet a lowercase, b lowercase, c lowercase... z lowercase, A uppercase...

But the Arabic alphabet has a different cap/lowercase letters.
As well as different forms for beginning/middle/end of words.
