How much do you think nVidia's Fermi cards are going to cost?

In case you've been out of the loop, nVidia has their new lineup of cards - codenamed Fermi - or simply the 3xx series of cards, set for the ever-so specific release date of "march-ish". Providing they make that date, how expensive do you think the Fermi cards are going to be?

I feel with ATI's lower price point that the cards are hopefully comparable. nVidia tends to have their cards overpriced.

Usually when the latest generation of nvidia cards come out they usually are priced like 400-1000 dollars. Im not really sure about the new cards as I haven't looked but im guessing you will be droppin at least 400 on a new one and 1000 for a top of the line.

Following the tech sites of late, it looks like [http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/01/17/nvidia-gf100-takes-280w-and-unmanufacturable/]:
The fermi chips are huge (= costly to make), have low yields (= costlier to make), consume vast quantities of power (estimated to come close to the absolute maximum 300W the PCIe spec can take) and run very hot (due to the vast power draw).

We'll have to see how it turns out, but it's looking like it'll make ATI's 2900XT line launch flop look decidedly minor in comparison

I dont know but if I have a good graphics card that supports dx11 and can play Crysis with no lag on the extreme settings and 1920 x 1620 (I think its that) resolution, will I need to upgrade?

I can't even see a reason to upgrade my 9800GTX and thats close to 2 years old now and nowhere near the top end we have today in performance like a 5970

Too much.

Latest and greatest is an expensive route, especially given the rapid developmental nature of technology. It'll likely be outdated relatively soon.

They're called the GF100 now? nVidia makes pretty good graphics cards but they REALLY need a new marketing team.

Likewise, I have an 8800 from BGF of some sort (i forget the specifics, that's how old it is) and I'm still more or less running everything maxed out. Sometimes I need to turn shadows down though.

I was kind of hoping these cards would break some graphical barriers and we could see the next jump in graphics, but if they're going to be like a grand each...

I certainly hope you're being sarcastic and not genuine, here.

GF100 was the pre-release engineering codename for the chips, the 3xx is the new one for retail

In my main rig I am running two radeon 5870 cards that cost over eight hundred bucks one of these sons a bitches are said to run over a grand so I will most likely leave not pay any attention to Nvidia.

alright, thanks :D

edit: holy BALLS these things are gigantic!

Look at the overhang on that thing. I'd have to measure to make sure it fits into my box.

They are actually called the GTX480 and the GTX470.

This is because nVidia have released low level DX10.1 only GT3xx named cards under operation rebrand, which has been rebranding 8800GT's for 2 years now. There is basically no real difference between the 8800GT, 9800GTX, the GTS250. Might even make it to the 3 series.

I'd push the boat out and say that nVidia are going to be wanting £350 for a 480, and £275 for a 470. They'll be rare due to manufacturing issues early on, and won't make them a penny.

Specially if they are only as fast as rumoured they are. Because if they are only pushing 10% like i've heard, ATi will just drop their prices on the Evergreen line which will force nVidia to reduce theirs even more, and it'll be interesting to see nVidias financials this year. I don't see them making much money.

I'm not all that found of nVidia since bumpgate. I've had 2 8800GTS die personally, and know of at least 6 more, all the same issue. Just denying the problem existed. Good work.

Unless Fermi is amazing, nVidia have done serious damage to their credibility in the last 2 years, notice the laptops carrying ATi these days... that's not a coincidence. Alienating massive swathes of the high end market as well is never a good way to go, as the people buying the high end tend to sway the lower end lot too
So they're the 4 series now... *facepalm*
My 8800 has been running strong for a long time now and has never given me any trouble. Reagrdless, I hold no "card loyalty". I fluctuate between ATI and nVidia based on price and performance, I was just curious as there's a lot of excitement about the fermi cards.

I guess we just have to wait for them to release and see the benchmarks. I'm itching to do some upgrading it's just a really awful time to upgrade.

What the fuck? That thing looks like it can hold on a computer inside it. That's ridiculous. If you but gun barrel and a ammo box you can turn into a stationary machine gun.

Daaaaaamn lol it is quite the beast. This kinda works though since I've been thinking of building a new computer but I may need to put it off a bit and spend more than I was wanting to if I wanna get this baby in it.

It probably makes as much heat as well ;)

Not as much as it'll cost to power the thing... On a serious note, what would you even use it for? There's nothing I can't play with my current hardware

I'm finding some games are starting to lag. I'm running at 1920x1080 so it's a pretty high resolution compared to what I played at with my old monitor. For instance, empire total war does not run all that hot with my current hardware and neither does dragon age. Though bioware has proven many times they can't make a very optimized engine.

Regardless I was thinking of upgrading my card, but with these new ones coming out I'll be waiting. I was just curious as to how much I should plan on saving up, you know?

Though really I'd feel silly spending $600 on a GPU.
