I think I'm the opposite in some games, but exactly the same in others. If there is a save counter in the game I pretty much won't save, I will let the game autosave, i.e. such as Fallout, I think this stems from Resident Evil, it was one of the games I used to play as a kid, and the attitude of not saving too often has stuck with me.
On the other hand, if there is no counter I will sometimes save all the time, like in Deadly Premonition, pretty much everytime I pass a phone I use it.
There are some exceptions though, such as GTA, I have probably saved that game 4 times, Bioshock I tend not to save in, unless it's on Hard mode, and most of the other games I own only ever auto save anyway like COD or Prototype, so for me it varies from game to game.
Also I never use continues in games, I hate that little box which says Ha ha, you suck and have had to use a continue, this is why I have never used a Vita Chamber in Bioshock.
