FF9 (2000, I think) did, briefly. As did Terranigma, which is.. 95, now that I checked. Sacrifice, 2001 (I think). Those were all up there for a while.

The latest, though, has held the position for ages and will probably never be dethroned. Planescape: Torment, 1999.

Edit: Now that I look at it, a lot of my favourites are RPGs. Funny, never noticed before.

I better stop there before I end up composing a top-25 or something ridiculous. Even though I'm extremely tempted now... Ah well.
I've got a Top 25 in a text file. Comes in handy for those copypasta "your top 5/10/25 all-time favorite games" threads. Also serves as a useful self-referential treasure hunt for alert readers, who could probably reconstruct my top ten just by noticing when I reference the list in my posts about the games on the list:

1. Rome: Total War
2. Fallout 3
3. Fallout: New Vegas
4. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
5. Tropico
6. Rise of Nations
7. Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
8. Mount&Blade
9. Victoria: Revolutions
10. Hearts of Iron 2
11. Railroad Tycoon 2
12. Port Royale 2
13. Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
14. Napoleon: Total War
15. Civilization 4
16. Patrician 3
17. The Sims 2
18. SimCity 4
19. Medieval 2: Total War
20. Europa Universalis 2
21. Capitalism 2
22. Crusader Kings
23. Empire: Total War
24. Out of the Park Baseball X
25. Civilization 2

This list has been PC only since December 2009, just because PC games kept entering the list and pushing console games off it.

(edit: as an aside, games outside the top four tend to move up and down the list when I get on a major kick playing a lower-rated game, but I don't sincerely believe anyone gives a flying crap unless it's affecting the top 5---a list Oblivion cracks on what seems like the semi-annual occasion of me playing the crap out of it.)

'Tis Morrowind, it came out in 2002, I have literally no idea when I first played it, it was a while ago. Within a month or two, it was my favourite game, and it hasn't changed since.

So yeah, it's fairly old.
Morrowind is also my most favorite game of all time. I'm thinking of reinstalling it just to add the 2011 updated packs posted on here.

The Wing Commander series.
20 years old. circa 1990
Long Live Bluehair !!

Just wished the live action movie would have been as great as the game.
Enlisted the actors out of the game instead of the guys from Scooby Doo.
and got a real director to do the job.

plus.. Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Zac McCracken & the Alien Mindbenders. any of the Monkey Island games and of course.. DUKE NUKEM 3-D, Come get some !

I think I'm showing my age here. How about the original PONG game. circa 1977. I begged my parents to get it for me. $75 bucks for the system ! A little brown box with 2 knobs, a reset/restart button, a on/off switch with a red light, 1 small speaker that went boink boink boink ennnnnt and kept score to 15! Now how about that for "old school"

But if were talking new games, it would have to be Fallout 3. Over 7 months playing, 250 hours play time recorded. Finishing up the last DLC, Mothership Zeta.
Doom 3, Half Life 2 series, Portal would have to be up there on the charts too.

Morrowind for now. Perhaps New Vegas will replace it, but I haven't even completely beaten one play through yet because of all the dicking about I've been doing, so I can't judge it perfectly yet.

In any event, its made by Bethesda.

'Tis would be Final Fantasy IX, which came out in 2001 here in Europe. So, a good 10 years.

I just spent the last 25 hours (straight!) playing a campaign in Rome: Total War. Anyone who knows me even slightly knows my love for that game (and for what it's worth, I played as the Julii, my favorite faction. So easy to get those first 49 provinces when taking them from barbarians, then simply march on Rome).

Way back in 2004 I got the game when it came out, and at release I said "if they can get most of the bugs out of this game, it's quite possibly the best game I've ever played." And sure enough, when the 1.2 patch hit in late fall '04, I elevated RTW to my "best game ever" position where it has stayed constantly for the past six years.

For Discussion:

So...what's your favorite game of all-time, what year did it come out (or did you first play it), and has it constantly held that "best ever" position or have other games come and gone from your #1 all-time spot?

(fun fact: Since 1996, only three games---Final Fantasy VI, Alpha Centauri, and Rome---have held the #1 spot on my list.)
I really should download all these patches...I have never downloaded a patch for a PC game in my life...except for maybe COD2. You played any of the expansion packs? Alexander is supposed to be good. You play Medieval 2? (I am pretty in Total War series in case you don't get it already lol)

Ohhh and mine had to be...jeez either Metroid Prime or Ocarina of Time.

Not very. 5 years.

Oblivion is still on the current console generation.

Although, it is old enough that my generic, non-gaming labtop can run it!

Well, I can't put "distant land on". But I can make the draw distance solid enough for play. It's just the vast distance that it can't handle. I can't see mountains, landscape and shape, etc.

One of the reasons I still play the console version.

Well...

I was just ninja'd apparently.

I'm gonna go sulk.

I'll go by the US release date and say close to 12 years with Final Fantasy Tactics, to date it has remained the only game I am physically required to play every couple of months, and still remain interesting to play.

My favorite game is Nights into Dream which will be 15 years old this year. Hard as hell but still really fun.

Rome: Total War (2004), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2007), or the Assassin's Creed games (2007-2010). I just find those 5 games just so damn awesome!
