This question was brought about as I was hit by a car yesterday, and the first thing I did, after flying 10 feet through the air, was to apologise to the guy driving the car.
Ouch. Anything major happen? No broken bones?

Anyways, I'd say I'm polite, at least, much more polite than anyone in my school...

I live in England and people keep trying to stab me. Well, it's not what I'd call polite.

We're not planning anything, honest!

OT: I'm a nice polite person. When I want to be.

I like to think i'm polite, although i've noticed that we do like to keep ourself to ourself and not be overly friendly to people we have only just met. But i do love sarchasm :D

But my family?
We're all painfully apologetic.

Q: How polite are the English?
A: Rather!

You see what I did there, I used them words in a clever way. Pretty smart, huh?

Being British, however, I'm inclined to believe that it's not that we're overly polite, it's that everyone else is just plain rude and/or inconsiderate. Same with all these other British stereotypes too. Especially the teeth. I swear, the way some yanks go on about this you'd think they were just disembodied jaws wandering around...

Then again, I suppose the amount of time they spend saying rude and inconsiderate stuff, you can't help but notice all the minor imperfections with their teeth...

I'm from Exeter and I don't meet many polite people if I'm honest. Most people are either arrogant rich brats or aggresive horrible chavs. The elderly (the supposed polite generation) are rude, racist, self-righteous and seem to spend most of their time 'accidentally' hitting people with their shopping bags and tutting under their breath.

On the other hand, I try and be polite to everyone. I've lived in Brighton and that's a lovely city. I can never get the hang of London, though.

So - I think it depends on where you are but I do think the politeness of Britain is a myth, or at least it's disappearing fast. Every American I have talked to or met (discounting Xbox live for obvious reasons) has been very lovely, the same true of Canadians, French, Finnish, Danish, yada yada.

I'm English. I've lived in the UK all my life, but my father has lived in the US for many years now. I've visited often and stayed in many different states, and I'd say that the "mid west" (which isn't really west at all, but that's what they call it) is just about the most polite place I've ever been to. It's certainly far more polite than any of the places I have lived and studied and worked in the UK, which include Rotherham (South Yorkshire), Mill Hill (London), Twickenham/Isleworth (Middlesex), Ealing (London), Bracknell/Reading (Berkshire), Braintree/Chelmsford (Essex) and Greenock (Inverclyde... that's in Scotland BTW).

I've met quite a few people from the UK and they seem to be nice. Of course, I've also met a few of them who came off as rude to me. The thing about England is it's just like everywhere else. There are friendly people and there are rude people.

Our national language is Sarcasm.

What do you think?
That's fantastic.

I'm not an Englishman exactly (i'm a SAVAGE from the neighbouring country ((if you can call it that)) of Wales.), but I'd consider myself quite polite. But our insults and rudeness are usually much sharper and more sarcastic, as Amnestic said. So, whilst we may APPEAR polite, a lot of us are TEETHING with venom.

I'm English (from Sheffield if it makes a difference), and I'm pretty polite. I live in a pretty crap area, so most people I live near are chavs ie.not polite. However, at college and public places and all that, people are over-polite to the point where they'll say sorry if you crash into them. I do that too.

But like others have said, we're also veeerryy sarcastic. It's fun.

The stereotype is just really outdated - think about football matches abroad. They don't say "Ah, the Brits are coming, let's put the kettle on". Instead, they rush out the riot police, because we're all hooligans.

And what about Brits who holiday overseas? A lot of people holiday in southern Spain, in resorts that resemble British seaside towns because that's what we want, just with better weather, and all we do once we're there is get hammered and insult the locals.

I don't think our international image is very good, and I'm embarrassed because it's justified.

More polite than the Americans, much less polite than the Japanese.

As a people?
No more than anyone else.

Generally we're not that polite. If you walk down a street, no-one will smile. In a shop no-one will smile unless they have to. We are quite good for our please and thankyou's but I would say we are amongst the grumpiest people in the world...
Are you from the north or the south?

Almost every town, including mine, are full of polite people unless they're chavs. Hell even chavs in my area say "Excuse me". They'd probably apoligise for knifing you.

Anyway OT: In my area and in most northern towns, are full of polite people but there will always be grumpy and unpolite people wherever you go.

On the whole people around here are generally polite, doing crazy things like holding the door open for people and letting old people on the buses first. Though there are some less polite people too. Like the people who beat my friend up for kicks. Actually, they were kind of polite too. We were playing football with them prior to them stalking and beating up my friend and they kept apologising to me and my friend Jen when ever they came in contact with us as we were girls and we might get hurt? It was a little puzzling.
