I was quite entertained by the ideas about what alien life would like presented in Discovery Channel's "Alien Planet" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Planet]
Those were incredibly reasonable aliens for the most part, too.

sentient non-human life could look like just about anything.

the aliens can maybe even be talking floating balls of energy.

but I wouldn't recommend looking too much into that, I certainly didn't.

Didn't Yahzee say something like:"A long time ago, there could have been dragons around the corner, then a little less time ago, there could have been dragons in other continents, and now there can only be dragons in space."

Of course aliens could look like anything, but my best guess is they are based on carbon and water, and aren't anything that isn't similar to the life that has appeared on earth.

The laws of physics and basic elements are, as far as we know, the same in the whole galaxy, and Darwin is a *****.

The operation of tools and technology is what allows humans to be as advanced as we are. Aliens of similar or greater technological skill must have some method for interacting with tools effectively, ergo humanoid forms. That's why dolphins didn't invent computers, they don't have thumbs! (And electricity works piss-poorly underwater)

For intelligent life, there are several things that would probably be true

If they're varniverous/omniverous, they'd probably evolve similarily to us. Depending on the other creatures in their environment, they'll have similar style of teeth, and front faced eyes. If they're herbivores, then they may have side facing eyes and grinding teeth. They'll probably also have opposable thumbs, as those were huge advances in evolution that would probably show up elsewhere, as the creme de la creme of creature's evolution wants to grasp something. If they're large like us, they would probably need to respire oxygen, as oxygen is a huge contributor to our ability to be active, intelligent creatures. They'll probably have at least somewhat similar lungs to ours, as they're a simple way for oxygen to be utilized. They would also probably have a relatively large head, similar to ours, in order to accommodate a large brain.

They'll probably have a similar body structure to ours (in that they'll have a head, appendages, and a definite front and back side) because that is sort of the basic structure of higher life forms.

Apart from that, there would be an unlimited amount of variation depending on the environment of the planet they evolved on.

Then again, this could all be bunk and an intelligent alien could just be a sapient puddle of slime.

There are far to many variables to take into account I couldn't even begin to guess what they would look like.
