Oh, something silly like other animes. I remember the ending of something silly called Inuyasha or whatever. It basically came down to some battle with the "main bad guy", they "won" but he got away. They swore to hunt him down when, wherever. Then they literally rode into the sunset, I believe.

While that was one of the worst endings for a series, the reason was the manga was far from conclusion and inactuality stretched into what could be estimated as another 150+ episodes if they were ever to be created. I do not know the precise reason why the anime ended as it did however numerous fans have demanded a continuous. The actual ending was equally cliche though...Mariena said:

To be honest I think that there will more than likely be another time skip after this Pain fight. I believe Kishimoto won't end it now because:
a) There are too many loose ends to make up
And
b) While he is making so much money from the series why would he won't to end it?
