All you need to do is continue playing. Sure your K/D ratio may take a hit, but you'll slowly start to see improvement. Stick with it.

OK... Every one saying upgrade to a PC... this person is looking for help not looking to have to start over (skill wise against more accurate controls and enemy players.)

If your of moderate skill then there's nothing to be ashamed of it means you can hold your own in a round while not being a major drag to the team. While you might be able to carry your team completely the only thing I could suggest is find/know players you like and work well with and team up often when you have the feeling that you can count on your team it's a great mental/moral boost (plus you don't wanna mess up to bad infront of player who could joke about it later.)

IF that doesn't help the only other thing I can offer is just pratice more MP: FPSs don't have difficulty settings so you'll just have to learn on your own how to handle yourself on your own based on how you like to play.

Oh if it hasn't crossed your mind try adjusting the control settings maybe tuning to pitch speed faster or slower might aid you with aiming and looking around.

I'm skilled, but I've been playing FPS games since I was 5, so its basically second nature to me.

All I can say is practice practice practice! With time you will get better. Trust me.

Never spend much time out in the open. Always run from cover to cover. Never spend too much time in one place, but never just run around all the time. Cover is your best friend. Learn to use cover and corners to your advantage. You'd be shocked at how easy it is for people to run right by you when you are crouched in the shadows. Also, distance is your friend when it comes to firefights. The closer they are the larger target you are. Most of all, keep a cool head and make sure your shot is good before you give away your position or open fire. nothing like trying to kill someone from long range and letting them get away because you rushed your shot. Also, stay relaxed in a 1v1 firefight most people panic and start spraying and praying. Make sure you shoot to kill.

Experience is all it takes as rar as I'm concenred. Since most FPS games are quite similar, enough time playing a variety of them ensures you have a basic level of proficiency that is adequate for most any game. Beyond mastering the input device (a necessary first step), the next is to figure out the basic trends inherent in a given map. In most console FPS games, victory is awarded to the person who shoots first, and the best way to accomplish this isn't by honing one's reaction time to superhuman speeds but rather having a good idea where an enemy is likely to appear at any given moment and point your weapon near that spot.

Rule #3: Please don't camp or noobtube. It just makes you look like a jackass.
If it kills people it's a legitimate strategy, don't listen to people who whine when you shotgun them in the back or snipe them from a mile away, either they weren't paying attention or left themselves in the open.

I'm a predominantly RPG gamer so when I first got introduced to FPS properly it was through Halo with my friends and I sucked.
I couldn't get used to the controls so I ended up hating it.
I'm still not the biggest FPS fan but I can get through normal single player fine and thus able to hold my own in games with players of a medium skill level and often win games.
Advice is, especially if you like FPS, just practice and eventually you'll get better and try and play with friends who can help you out with how to improve.

Just want to point out that it is not that girls are generally bad at shooters. It's that generally, Girls gravitate more towards games that have a heavier social dynamic, guys towards more competitive, formalized systems. This also leads to a tendency towards girls playing less, and therefore seem to be not as good. This is also why girls who practice end up being just as good as guys. My recommendation is that you find a game that involves lots of Coop. L4d maybe, if you are okay at twitch shooting. TF2 maybe, and experiment with the classes. Find something with a single player component, and practice at that first: That way, the adjustment is a lot easier.

Lets say you see someone before they see you and start shooting them.
They whip around and kill you with a grenade launcher.

It's overpowered.
Stop defending it.

To reply to OP:
Whatever game you want to get good at, keep playing until the muscle memory sets in.
If you can control the game without thinking about it then you're set to improve!

Stay off the regularly taken paths. Stay out of regularly camped spots.

Pick your targets. Sometimes you have to let two or three people slip by you before you find your target. If you're not sure wether or not you can hit someone, don't shoot. It gives you away.

Threat detection. The guy facing you is a lot more of a threat than the one with his back turned.

Pay attention to friendly names and positions. This way, you know where they died, so you know wether or not you should go to where they were, or flank the guy that just killed them.

Always have an exit strategy.

Keep your weapons reloaded. You never know when that 1 bullet will save you.

Don't lay on your trigger at long range. Learn to burst fire.

Know your weapon. Assault rifles are typically medium to long range weapons. Carry either a pistol or shotgun. Switch to your secondary when you go indoors or get into a tight spot. Same for a sniper rifle. SMG can be used at pretty much any range, though you wont hit anything at a distance if you don't burst fire.

Basically. Break off from the norms. Stay alert. Most importantly, have fun. Use what you enjoy and forget what everyone else thinks.

I don't know, depends on the game in question.

Skills from Portal won't carry over to Bad Company 2 and vice versa, yet they are both FPS games.

It also depends on the game type. Skill in Team Deathmatch won't help you in a Game type that relies on the completetion of an objective. Just keep at it, the more you play, the better you get.

Here are some tips that might help you.

Learn to move and shoot. That is key.

Learn the placement of weapons and health around the map. Spend some time exploing the maps by your self.

If there are vehicules, play around with them. Learn to drive them well. See if you can drive vehicules into the buildings or anywhere on the map.

As lame as this may sound, play against bots before people. Bots are easier and predictable, this way you can learn when to shoot, what to look for. Also, bots generally wont beat you into the ground so it gives you time to look around and figure out good vantage points for sniping. When you do well against bots, up their difficulty. I got great at shooters by playing against bots all the way back in Timesplitters for the ps2.

If the game does not have bots the play with a friend. Split screen is best, but if not then online. take time to practice shooting while they are running sideways, while you are running, jumping, driving, etc.

Camp in a corner.

Or hack.

The top and bottom 50 on Modern Warfare 2's leaer boards are so obviously hacking it's not funny. Although Bungie and Dice are quite good about dealing with hacktards, the rest just suck at it.

The way I see it, if you want to play FPS or RTS games, play them on PC.
If you want to play 3rd person or Fighting games (Street Fighter, etc), play them on console.
This method has not let me down.
(By the way, Metroid Prime 3:Corruption is a great FPS for Wii. In theory, WIi is great for FPS because of point & shoot with wii remote)

one of the most important things is patience. Dont try to shoot evry oponent you see. If you see someone on the other side of the map, or running away from you, leave him for your team-mates.

Often going round in groups or in pairs will help.

movement is important, dont ruch into things, try to move smoothly.

i always found that lowering the sencitivity helps. (especialy on pc) Most people thing its best to have a higher sencitivity, but its makes things worse trust me.

and watching other players is sometimes helpful

also if you have to reload a lot dont do it in the open, iv died many times from running around a corner while reloading.
