Walk slowly and stay behind team mates, let them get shot so you know where the enemy is. In a free for all, dont attack anyone unless they're busy attacking someone else, then shoot them both. Hide and wait for people to pass and shoot them in the back. Just be a cowardly jackass and your guranteed to do okay.

Meh, I was never really that good, until I started playing Halo 3 with my friends. Every 3 days or so we would play together(This was BEFORE I got the game, mind you). When I finally bought the game I found it easy. Word of advice, get used to the controls before you start playing and make them as easy as possible.

Never look at the ground, unless in mid-air. You won't kill someone by shooting their feet while they blow your head off.

Reload. Reload. Reload. Unless you know that there are enemies nearby, always make sure to have a full clip. This is essential in games like Halo where you need to empty a full clip to kill someone.

It's always nice to have one close-range weapon and one mid-to-long-range weapon. This way if you're stuck in a confined space you can shoot the guy down without having to use a sniper, but in open areas you won't get mowed down before you even have a shot. In games like Battlefield: Bad Company (1, not sure about 2) the Sniper automatically comes with a pistol though, so not too much to worry about there.

TEAMWORK. There is a much better chance of killing the other bastard if you stick in groups, than if you are alone. Also, if you get hit by a mod from the other side, you have a better chance of surviving. In games like CTF, if no one else is staying back to defend the flag, you should take the initiative and do so yourself. There's usually one sneaky bastard on the other team that will try to sneak around the firefight in front of their base and take your flag.

Have fun. If you're not having fun, you're not going to want to play. If you don't want to play, your performance will get worse. Other than that, it's a freaking game, so you should have fun for that reason alone.

I'd say you just need to play more in order to get better.

If you write a short story now, for example, and than look over it in about two years, you'd be surprised on how much you've upgraded.
That is, if you attempt a short story again, just to compare.

PS: For all PC gamers out there, the REAL shit begins at consoles when you are talking about FPS games.
Yours is childs play, trust me.

Depends, When I first played MW2 [my first fps Live experience] I got 0-6 kills for at least a week. I just practiced. Now, I'm getting 10-20 kills a game, blowing up Pave Lows, and killing entire teams on last stand. Make sure to have fun, get a variety of game. Left 4 Dead 2 [I can't think of one time I heard hate speech there unless it was against zombies.], Modern Warfare 2 [Pissing of racists is a fun hobby.] Battlefield Bad Company 2[personal favorite because I holds double then MW2 and you can actually drive stuff.]

i totally disagree. PC FPS games are just much faster paced, evryone is quicker to aim and far more precise. I think it requires faster reactions and more precision than on consoles. ontop of that there are hardly any "casual gamers" on the PC these days, they have all left to play on the consoles.

Sell your Xbox 360 and use it to buy a PC. Now you're good at shooters.
There you go. The only proper answer to your question.

FPS games have no place on consoles.

Are you kidding? I would so much rather use a 360 controller for FPS play instead of a mouse.

When you're playing online, stick to your teammates, that usually works out pretty well.

Get used to the controller and become confident with your aim, if you second guess about hitting a target then you are never going to hit it.

And if you need a pc to be able to aim straight then you suck at fps games.

To improve my argument a bit more, I can mention the "neglected" parts of FPS on PC.
I play Fear 1 on the PC and numerous flash games. So I'm not completely inexperienced.

First of, to me, the controls on a PC makes it far too easy. I really find no challenge in it. If you play a console, you will.

Secondly, all noobs/casual gamers starts of at the PC and stays there until they grow their skills a tad (at least now, when the computer is a playable instrument). What kind of humbug are you pulling out about consoles here? We all start of at the PC since that's usually the first kind of game mechanic we grow up with, as mostly all homes got one, specifically those with families.
No reason buying a console before even grasping the term of "gaming". All parents ought to know that.

Recently I have been noticing a problem, I am absolutely no good at any type of fpses, or any games for that matter. Now I play a lot but the best I can ever muster seems to be around medium skill level. I've heard that girls just genetically suck at games, but I've seen a bunch of good girl gamers so I'm not particularly agreeing with this.

Fellow escapists I ask you this:
Are you skilled? How did you do it? Do you have any tips?

Thanks,
Lineoutt

EDIT: I also won't take the 'Give up, you'll never be good" from any pretentious gamers
I would call myself semi-awesome as I can beat most of whom I fight against, but I have not yet achieved godhood.

In your case, here some general tips, from the general examples of Halo 3 and MW2, as they both include at least one aspect from every major FPS.

1) Play the campaign on its hardest difficulty. Though it may not be like fighting a real thinking being, a high difficulty will teach you to use the environment to you advantage, and add that little extra speed to your reaction time for those "oh shit" moments.

2)Explore. knowing what parts of the map are good sniping spots, choke points, and blind spots can give you a great edge when you play. A few games that offer multiplayer also give you the option of playing offline on the same field, which lets you check out the locale without receiving a lead enema complements of the other side.

3)Don't necessarily grab the big guns. If you have the choice between a rocket launcher with only two rounds and a battle rifle that's fully loaded, go for the latter. While it won't have as much punch as the RL, it won't run out in the middle of the firefight, rather than leaving you scrambling for weapons whilst getting your armored tuchas blown off.

4)specialization. Don't try and do too many things at once, because it often leads to you not being able to anything well. find a role your good at, then gear your tools and strategies ot maximizing that style. Take for example MW2's multiplayer: I am a flanker type fighter, meaning that I slide past the frontline and cause chaos by capturing their spawn zones or taking out their snipers. This requires that I not be noticed, so I put a silencer on my gun and use the coldblooded perk to hide myself.

5)Friends. If you know a friend who's good at FPSs, ask if they'd play a co-op game with you, or if you could watch them play an FPS. You could learn new tactics or combos against certain situations from them, and have fun in the process.

6)Experiment! If you think that doing something a certain way might work, then try it. You may discover a whole new facet to the game, and even if you fail, it's not like the world is going to end.

I hope that these tips help you in your quest for FPS mastery. Good luck!

Simple, beat the story on the hardest difficulty, then you are pretty much guaranteed to be decent.

Try to watch gameplay videos of a certain FPS you want to be good at, and see which strategies work, and which don't. For instance, you can greatly benefit from changing your control layout in the recent Call of Duty games from default to tactical, which allows you to perform 'drop-shots', meaning that you'll go prone in a quick manner in the middle of a auto-a-auto firefight, forcing your opponent to adjust their aim, while you keep on them. Works for me. But try to get used to the controls before trying anything fancy, ok?

since the controls are easy for evryone, it makes the game faster, its all about being realy quick and realy accurate, being 1/100 of a second slower than the other person wont do.(thers a smaller gap between a good player and a new player) Because its easy, it pushes evryone to be even faster, and search for evry advantage they can get, in reaction time and aiming the mouse quickly.

These days i hardly see any casual gamers on the pc. they get console experience from going to thier friends house and playing on their console etc.

Online shooters have a freakin' steep learning curve...one that you'll slide back down if you don't play frequently.

Having said that:

- Don't run(especially forward)and shoot.

- Well placed bullets beat lots of bullets.(admittadly...that one depends on the game)

- Constant class swapping isn't helpful.

- Mute other players unless you trust them to be amicable...you won't play better feeling slightly aggravated with a 9 year old squeaking in your ear.

That's probably all I can offer. I haven't been abnormally skilled in a shooter since the old unreal tournament games.

Turn the look sensitivity down in the options menu until you improve.

90% of the time turning the look sensitivity down improves your skills.

Also as for the girls sucking at games not true. I was watching a documentary awhile back about the history of videogames. In the days when pong arcade machines first came out and started to appear in bars an such, there were these groups of women that would bet on pong and hustle guys for money similar to pool. On average women were better at pong than men because women have better small muscle control according to the documentary.

Try turning the look sensitivity down and giving sniping a shot. You may be surprised with the results.

well, it took me a LONG time of playing them pretty religiously to get to my middle/upper-middle area of expertise in FPS games. all it really is, is trying to figure out how to counter certain play types, if people start using the drop-shot method, you aim down a bit more while firing. that kind of thing. also, it helps to try and increase your hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and reaction time. i'll help you out as best i can

Buy FPS games on PC, then use 360 controller. Although I fail to see how it's better, there you have it.
