OKay, First off I loved Morrowind when it first came out. The setting was great and it was a huge improvement over Daggerfall and Arena in my opinion. I read various online forums and I see various people talking about how Morrowind had better combat. WTF?!?!? Where are they getting this?? ITs usually the hardcore fanboys of MW that are doing it, I'm sure.. but just to test this out, I dusted off my GOTY copy of Morrowind and even added a couple of updating mods to it. Now this is the first time I've played MW in about 6 or 7yrs, and I've been playing Oblivion religiously for the last 3yrs or so. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a decent crack. this decent crack lasted a grand total of just over 3HRs before I gave up in frustration. Am I missing something??? Have these people, who have taken to writing emotionally charged rants about how much better morrowinds combat is over oblivions, got some kind of Mod that overhauls MW's combat system?!? I will agree that the leveling enemies in oblivion is a pain (which is easily fixed with an easy to install mod I might add, but other than that, there is nothing about Morrowinds COMBAT that is better than Oblivions. Nothing!! Some may argue that the weapons they've taken out were better etc etc. -which is fair enough, they did remove many of the MW items from Oblivion. Again I think most people were only upset by this because they had nostalgically clung on to a particular weapon or armor and got a bit teary that they couldn't use it in the sequel. But I'm sorry, no matter what weapon you're using, walking up to an enemy, toe to toe and pressing the left mouse button repeatedly until you finally hit the enormous beast standing directly in front of you is Not something I wish to return to in future Episodes of the Elder Scrolls. I'll be the first to say Oblivions combat wasn't perfect by a long shot, but at least you could flank, side-step, shoot arrows in a manner that somewhat resembled reality, but most importantly--- If you are standing in front of something and you swing at it with your 7Ft long steel Claymore, you'll either hit it, or see it retreat backwards in time to dodge your swipe. No slot machine style swing and miss rubbish!
In TES V, I'm thinking they should overhaul the combat, definitely-- but don't take any leaves out of morrowinds book of combat except for including enemies that don't level with you. I wish I never reloaded and started replaying morrowind to be honest as my fond, nostalgic memories of the brilliant game it was have now been tarnished. Its the little improvements made to the world in oblivion like the radiant AI (goofy as it can be) and the more involved side quests (killing a house full of rats isn't any fun no matter what game you're playing). I was Walking around Morrowind again the other day, for the first time in over half a decade, and noticed that the other characters just stand there looking straight ahead. the odd one or two characters may walk around, not on any mission or errand, just walk from one end of the cell to the next aimlessly. Now, when I originally started playing morrowind back in 2003, I didn't take any notice of this, and never paid any attention to it. This time around it stuck out like a sore thumb! Another argument I hear from people who think MW is so much better the obliv is that the characters you ran into had so much more to say. Again, WTF?!?!? I put this to the test also. I spoke to everyone I came across in seyda neen to Balmora (and bear in mind the text instead of voice didn't bother me back then and still doesn't to this day, and each person had the same basic list of things to say -background, a little help, a little advice. Each character I spoke to had pretty much the same response to each of these questions and not one bit of "advice" or "help" I was given was any good. Add to this the speechcraft skill (which gets Knocked quite a lot in oblivion) feels similar to the combat pokies machine mechanics. Admire and intimidate in random alternations until you finally succeed and keep mashing the options until you get where you want. Having said all this, I still think oblvions speechcraft was pretty ordinary but at least it felt like a mini-game, rather than a slot machine. The unfortunate fact is that the newer games like oblivion have ruined my gaming expectations to the point that I can't enjoy MW these days. My main point here, is that most of what has gone into oblivion is an improvement, despite a few decisions which could have been implemented a little better. The levelling bandits and the console styled UI being the worst IMO. I think the next TES should take some of the best of both worlds but still look at improving the entire system as an independant project. I'd hate to see the next Elder Scrolls start bringing back left-button-mashing-roulette combat just because people are still nostalgic over Morrowind. I loved morrowind, and still have very fond memories of my early days with it.. but it's time to move on. I want TES V to not just be an improvement on Morrowind or Oblivion, but I want it to blow Both of them out of the water!
