You mean besides ending the series? Ok, how about make the world huge. It seems that they make these tiny pieces of lands for Link to go to and he walks around for 15 minutes then he is in the dungeon. Sure, the dungeons are pretty big, but it just makes it too formulaic. Maybe less dungeons and more open world.

That's easy. Bring back the owl that was in Ocarina of Time. You know the one I'm talking about. Bring him back into the game, to serve exactly the same purpose, with one exception.

Make him killable. Oh, the stress relief that will provide. It'd be worth buying a new Zelda game for that reason alone.

Nothing.

Nothing really needs to change.

The only thing that could be improved about Zelda was if the games had a built in sensor that detected if people complained about things like the Art or how similar it was to other Zeldas and if they wished they had stuck with another Zelda's style, and then delivered a Electrical Shock to the person.

I think the Vitality Sensor would be and excellent way to implement this.

Just like with EVERY Zelda game, people are gonna dislike SS when it comes out, then when another Zelda comes out they will instantly hate it and sing the praises of SS.

One idea is to take Zelda back to its roots of being a top-down view. Imagine what could be done with today's technology from that classic perspective. This also brings to mind how I wish they would make console Castlevanias and Metroids side scrollers again.
Oh, how a man can dream. I just don't really care for 3D zelda. I presume you've heard of the 2D metroidvania castlevania game hitting xbox live later this year?

Make the game harder, or at least give me the option. Ocarina of Time was freaking easy (I know one friend who did a three heart run with it) and with the exception of Majora's Mask (which was just frustrating for me) they've all been even easier. Wind Waker is pathetically easy, Twilight Princess isn't much harder. The only reason I didn't beat TP is because it got boring-I actually helped my sister defeat Ganondorf simply because the formula has gotten so stale I can do things perfectly the first time, since it's technically not the first time doing whatever the game wants me to do (having done it in previous Zelda titles).

So a quick list. Although first, I will agree that the formula is pretty decent. I like it. It's like Metroid. The formula works, so the games are good. Although there are a lot fewer Metroid titles, and that series really does change things up every now and then, something Zelda should try.

How to improve Zelda:

-Harder dungeons
-Harder bosses
-Everything does 1 heart damage to Link, MINIMUM. Enough of this quarter-heart nonsense
-Remove Ganon/Ganondorf
-Stop ripping off SotC badly (directed at TP)
-Stop reusing old weapons. New Zelda game=new weapons. All of 'em. I'm not even too crazy about seeing the Master Sword again. Give us a new magic blade instead
-Let us jump right into the action, Link to the Past style. Stop making us do boring crap to earn the right to cut things up.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head.

I love the Zelda series, but I must admit I'd like a bit more variation story-wise. I have a crazy idea! Make Link something other than a Hylian. Like maybe a Gerudo for once. It'd help him understand why Ganondorf was the way he was and probably would provide some interesting moral dilemmas.

The last couple of DS Zeldas were Top Down Style with 3D Animation.

Phantom Hourglass had its problems but was good overall.
Spirit tracks, on the other hand, was excellent.
It had a interesting story, some new weapons, and fun fights.

And Metroid:Other M is going to bring back a bit of the 3RD person Side Scrolling perspective.

It actually makes me so angry that people wont take off the Nostalgia Goggles to see what is right in front of them.
New Zelda Games with a fresh look at the Tried and True elements that make it a Zelda Game.

how to improve zelda? besides stopping the endless rehashes, i guess if they tried to set the game in a completely different setting and foccusing around something other than collecting various ancient key gems to defeat the new incarnation of Ganon, but I might be getting a little bit optimistic here to think Nintendo wants to make new games, when the market greedily laps up whatever they put out for sale.

My personal plan for mixing up the Zelda formula was an action-adventure high-speed ninja platforming game starring Sheik (http://bluehighwind.blogspot.com/2010/01/legend-of-sheik.html). But I never really intended for it to replace the regular Zelda games, only to be an interesting side-story. But alas, that game will never be made...

But on topic: I think having harder puzzles and betters bosses will save zelda. I hate how its the Go in dungeon -> get new item -> use item to attack boss 3 times formula.
Better variety of bosses would do it for me, I think. The one problem I had with Twilight Princess was that the bosses were predictable, the two most original in my opinion were Morpheel (the giant eel thing) and Zant (multi-stage madman).

It would be nice to see bosses that require a number of items to beat them, not just the one you pick up in that particular temple. Or maybe some more interesting optional items, things like the Hawkeye (which was awesome) but that was about it for TP.
