Well, the method I always used (albeit slightly gross method) when I had a lot of nosebleeds of a kid was to lean over the sink, plug the nostril that wasn't bleeding, and blow my nose. I guess you can use a tissue, but I think it's easier to just clean up the sink by running the water rather than cleaning up a blood spray when you accidentally blow a hole through the tissue.
Anyhow, usually I'd do this until a bloody snot would come out (told you it was gross) and then the nosebleed would be over. Or just until the bleeding stopped in general. Took about two minutes, I believe.
